ARKANSAS TECH MEN'S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AGAINST REDDIES

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys dropped a Great American Conference battle to the Henderson State Reddies on Saturday, 83-75. HSU's Kaylon Tappin led all scorers with 34 points, including 7-11 from three-point range.

  • Arkansas Tech (15-10, 9-10 GAC) returns to action on Monday, Feb. 19, as the Wonder Boys host Harding in Tucker Coliseum. The Great American Conference contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Henderson State (13-12, 8-11 GAC) took the first lead of the contest with a three on the Reddies' first possession, but the Wonder Boys answered with a 10-0 in just over two minutes to take a 12-6 lead.
  • Tech took its largest lead of eight on a Montrell Williams three-pointer with 14:48 left in the first half. The Reddies immediately responded, however, with a 14-2 run to take a 24-18 lead halfway through the period. 
  • HSU reached its largest lead at 12 points with a free-throw by Tappin that put the Reddies ahead, 45-33 with 2:18 until halftime. Mason Cline and Williams both knocked down triples in the final minute of the period, ending the half with Tech trailing, 47-41. 
  • Tappin scored a game-high 24 points in the half, with Williams following close with 18. 
  • Henderson State maintained its lead for the first nine minutes of the second half, until a three-pointer by Alex Brown gave Tech its first lead over 21 minutes at 62-59. 
  • HSU took back the lead two minutes later, but with 4:16 to play, Josiah Thomas netted a triple to tie the score, 73-73. The Wonder Boys could not switch the lead in their favor, however, as the Reddies outscored Tech 10-2 in the final four minutes. 

NOTABLES

  • Henderson State shot 47.0 percent from the floor in the game and 52.0 percent from three-point range. HSU's 13 triples are the third-most allowed by the Wonder Boys this season.
  • Arkansas Tech outscored Henderson State 12-7 on second-chance points, 14-12 on bench points and 24-18 on points in the paint. 
  • Williams finished with a team-high 20 points for the Wonder Boys, his fourth 20-point performance of the season. R.J. Glasper followed with 17 points and a game-high seven assists. 
  • Leonardo Edwards scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor, while Alex Brown recorded eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
