WILLIAMS AND NORTH LEAD SUNS TO SEASON SWEEP OF LADY MULERIDERS

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - Lyrik Williams scored a team-high 20 points, and Cheyenne North picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns defeated the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders 87-62 on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern Arkansas (8-16, 7-11 GAC) opened the first quarter with an 8-3 run and then reached its largest lead of six points just over a minute later when a three-pointer put the Lady Muleriders ahead, 13-7. 
  • The Golden Suns answered over the next four minutes of play with a 12-2 run that featured four points from McKenzie Morris, North, and Williams. A free-throw by SAU with four seconds left in the first period cut Tech's lead to 19-17 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Arkansas Tech (19-3, 15-3 GAC) carried its run to the second quarter, scoring the first 13 points of the period to take a 32-17 lead with just under five minutes until halftime. SAU tallied the final five points of the half, and the Suns took a 37-24 lead into the break.
  • The Golden Suns led by at least 14 points for the entire second half, claiming their largest lead of 29 points after a Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse free-throw put Tech ahead 81-52 with 3:05 to play. 
  • Tech outscored the Lady Muleriders 23-16 in the third quarter and 27-22 in the final period to claim the 87-62 victory.

NOTABLES

  • With the win, Arkansas Tech remains in second in the Great American Conference standings. 
  • Tech shot 41.2 percent from the field, while holding SAU to just 33.9 percent. The Golden Suns also converted on 28-34 free-throws, their second most made free-throws in a game this season. 
  • The Suns outscored the Lady Muleriders 44-28 in the paint, 27-7 in points off turnovers, and 24-13 in bench points. 
  • Williams led Tech with 20 points in 25 minutes, tallying her fourth 20-point game of the season. She also added eight rebounds and two steals. 
  • Ryann Goodsell scored 10 first-half points on 5-6 field goals in just 10 minutes. She followed with a four-point second half to finish with 14 points. 
  • Kylie Ladd pitched in 12 points and a team-high five assists. North's double-double came with four assists and two steals.
