GOLDEN SUNS REMAIN SECOND IN GAC STANDINGS WITH WIN OVER REDDIES

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Cheyenne North scored 22 points, Lyrik Williams tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse added 10 points and 10 rebounds in Arkansas Tech's 68-65 win over Henderson State on Saturday.

  • Arkansas Tech (20-3, 16-3 GAC) returns to action on Monday, Feb. 19, as the Golden Suns host Harding in Tucker Coliseum. The Great American Conference contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Golden Suns opened the game with an 11-2 run, with five different players scoring for Tech. The Suns held their lead for the rest of the first quarter, but a 10-4 run by the Reddies to end the period cut Tech's lead to just 21-20 after 10 minutes. 
  • Henderson State (18-7, 14-5 GAC) took its first lead of the game with a layup 19 seconds into the second quarter. The second period featured four ties and 10 lead changes, with neither team claiming a lead of more than three. 
  • With 1:08 until halftime, Stackhouse netted a three-pointer to send Tech into halftime with a 41-40 lead. 
  • The Reddies held the advantage in the third quarter, claiming there largest lead of six points at 55-49 with a three with 1:40 left in the period. Tech scored the final four points of the quarter, and the Reddies took a 55-53 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • Neither team claimed a lead of more than four in the fourth period. With 7:37 to play, Williams pulled Tech within two with a layup, and North followed just over a minute later with a triple to give the Suns a 62-61 lead.
  • The final six minutes featured four lead changes until North put the Suns ahead again on a layup with 3:05 remaining. Tech held the Reddies scoreless for the final 3:55, securing the three-point victory. 

NOTABLES

  • With the win, Arkansas Tech remains in second in the GAC standings, two games behind Southwestern Oklahoma. 
  • The Golden Suns committed a season-low nine turnovers, while forcing HSU into 14 giveaways that led to 14 points. Arkansas Tech outscored HSU 18-4 on second-chance points and 24-20 on points in the paint. 
  • North's first 20-point game of the season came with seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Williams added her seventh double-double, and picked up her first double-double as a Golden Sun. 
  • Kylie Ladd finished with 13 points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.
