GOLDEN SUNS FALL TO COTTON BLOSSOMS

MONTICELLO, Ark. Jacie Higgins scored 13 points, Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse added 12 points and Jayana Sanders chipped in ten points, but the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (3-4, 1-2 Great American Conference) ran into foul trouble and fell 75-65 to the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms (2-5, 1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Steelman Fieldhouse.

  • The Golden Suns return to Tucker Coliseum on Wednesday, Dec. 12, hosting Southern Arkansas in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded baskets over the opening minutes of the contest, Tech was able to build a seven point advantage (10-3) after Jayana Sanders drilled a 3-pointer.
  • UAM put a small run together, scoring eight of the next 15 points to trim the Golden Sun advantage to three points (14-11) with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Tech answered with an 8-4 run to close the quarter out, capped by Higgins half-court shot that went in as the buzzer went off. Tech led UAM 22-15 after one quarter of play.
  • Tech used the opening two minutes of the second quarter to stretch its lead to 30-17. UAM was able to narrow the gap to eight points (35-28), however five straight points from Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse pushed the Tech advantage back to double digits (40-27) with 1:15 remaining in the half.
  • The Cotton Blossoms score the final four points of the first half to cut the deficit to nine at the break (40-31).
  • UAM opened the second half on a 5-0 run and to cut the deficit to 40-36 at the 6:50 minute mark.
  • Tech answered with a 13-2 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers from Higgins to give the Suns a 15-point advantage (53-38), Tech's largest lead of the game.
  • The Cotton Blossoms closed out the third quarter on a 9-0 run, cashing in on Tech fouls as six of those nine points came off free throws.
  • UAM continued their run into the fourth quarter, scoring the first six points, to knot the game up at 53-53 with 7:47 remaining in regulation.
  • Stackhouse quickly gave Tech the lead back as her 3-pointer pushed the score to 56-53.
  • UAM gained its first lead of the game after Nina Kizzee hit a layup with 4:13 left to play (60-59).
  • The Cotton Blossoms outscored Tech 14-6 down the stretch, sealing a 74-65 win for UAM.
NOTABLES
  • UAM out shot Tech 40.0 to 36.9 percent.
  • UAM made the most of its trips to the charity stripe, connecting on 30 of 40 attempts, while Tech was 10-20 from the free throw line.
  • Tech held an 18-17 advantage in points off turnovers, while UAM held a 50-33 rebounding advantage, a 10-4 advantage in second-chance baskets and a 21-16 advantage in fast break points.
  • Tech committed 33 personal fouls, while UAM committed 19 personal fouls.
