GOLDEN SUNS FALL SHORT IN SEASON OPENER

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jacie Higgins scored a team-high ten points and Lyrik Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds but the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (0-1) came up short, falling 65-51 to Minnesota State-Moorehead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead, MSMU controlled the rest of the quarter, building a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Golden Suns opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run to regain the lead at 26-25 with 6:04 remaining in the first half.
  • The Dragons answered by closing the quarter out on an 12-0 run to take a 37-26 lead going into halftime.
  • MSMU came out in the third quarter an 8-0 run to go up by 19 points (45-26) at the 7:33 mark. Tech cut into the lead, trimming the advantage to 15 points (53-38) at the end of the third quarter.
  • Tech outscored MSMU 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but could never get closer than 13 points (53-40). The Dragons went on to defeat the Suns 65-51.

NOTABLES

  • Higgins scored a team-high ten points, followed by Hannah Villines and Alicia Mardis who each added nine points.
  • Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
  • MSMU shot 42.0 percent, while holding Tech to 30.9 percent from the field. The Golden Suns went 21-for-68 from the field and 3-for-19 from 3-point range.
  • The Dragons also outrebounded the Suns 45-34.
  • Tech forced 20 turnovers and scored 14 points off those miscues.

  • The Golden Suns return to the court tomorrow as they continue play at the Central Region Challenge in Kansas City, Mo. Tech will face off against Northern State with tipoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
