GOLDEN SUNS OFF TO 4-0 START AFTER WINS OVER PITTSBURG STATE AND DRURY

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Arkansas Tech volleyball team remains perfect at 4-0 after the Golden Suns wrapped up action in the Washburn University Invitational Saturday as they claimed a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-13, 25-15) against Pittsburg State University and a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21) against Drury.

  • Arkansas Tech returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5, where they open the day facing Bacone in a 2 p.m. match and following with a 6 p.m. matchup against Williams Baptist at Tucker Coliseum.  
HOW IT HAPPENED: ARKANSAS TECH VS. PITTSBURG STATE
  • Pitt State (2-2) took the first point of the match, but Tech sparked a 6-2, capped by Hunter Eshnaur service ace to give the Golden Suns a 6-3 lead.
  • The first set featured six ties, the Golden Suns (4-0) broke the final tie at 15-15 after Tabitha Spray delivered a kill to give Tech a 16-15 lead.
  • After breaking the 15-15 tie, the Golden Suns never looked back as they finished on a 10-6 run to claim the opening set 25-21.
  • The Suns applied the pressure in the second set, forcing ten Gorilla attacking errors to help Tech end the set on an 18-6 run to take the second set 25-13.
  • Arkansas Tech dominated the third set, behind six kills from Lexie Johnson and five kills from Spray. The Golden Suns hit .345 while holding the Gorillas to a -.037 hitting percentage, including seven attack errors.
  • The Golden Suns hit .245 for the match while limiting Pitt State to just -.011. Eshnaur finished with a match-high 11 kills and also added eight digs and two blocks. Johnston recorded a hitting percentage of .444 as she added ten kills of her own to go with her two blocks. Amanda Milnick recorded 36 assists, seven digs and four kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ARKANSAS TECH VS. DRURY
  • Drury (3-1) opened the match with a 7-1 lead, the Golden Suns responded with a 10-4 run to knot the set up at 11-11. The Panthers pushed their lead to 20-14, before Tech cut the lead to 22-20, but that's as close as the Suns would get as Drury took the opening set 25-20. 
  • The second set saw four ties before Tech started a 6-2 run, capped by Eshnaur's third kill of the game to give the Golden Suns a 15-11 lead. Spray helped Tech pushed the lead to 22-15 as she added two of her seven kills in the set during the Suns 7-4 run. The Panthers cut the lead to 24-22 but a Malnick kill gave the Golden Suns the second set 25-22.
  • The Panthers opened the third set with an 8-4 lead, Tech answered with a 7-2 run highlighted by an Allie Anderson kill to put the score at 11-10. The Golden Suns would push the score to 23-19 before Drury would come back to tie the game up at 23-23. A Johnston kill and a Panther attack error would give Tech the set, 25-23. Anderson had a team high five kills in the set.
  • After trailing 9-4 in the fourth set, the Golden Suns sparked a 12-5 run to put the score at 16-14. Then a 5-1 run, capped by Eshnaur's eighth kill of the match, gave Tech a 20-15 lead. The Panthers made an effort to come back, however the Spray put the match away with her match high 15th kill.
  • For the match, the Suns hit .207 with 55 kills. Although Drury put up 60 kills, they were held to a .187 hitting percentage. Spray finished with a match-high 15 kills, while Anderson added 13. Milnick led Tech in assists with 38 and in digs with 16.
NOTABLES
  • The Golden Suns' 4-0 start marks the sixth time in school history that Arkansas Tech has started 4-0. The last 4-0 start came during the 2008 season.
