GOLDEN SUNS DEFEAT ECU TO WIN 19TH STRAIGHT

ADA, Okla. - No. 18 Arkansas Tech moved to 19-0 on Friday, defeating East Central in straight sets to continue its best start to a season in program history.

  • Arkansas Tech (19-0, 6-0 GAC) will take the court again on Saturday in Durant, Okla., as Southeastern Oklahoma hosts the Golden Suns at 10 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • East Central (4-15, 0-6 GAC) opened the match on a 5-1 run and held its lead until a 6-0 run by the Golden Suns put Tech ahead, 22-20 late in the first set.
  • The Tigers later tied the set, 23-23, but kills by Allie Anderson and Lexie Johnston gave Arkansas Tech the 25-23 victory.
  • ECU took the early lead once again in the second game, but 18 kills by the Suns, including six from Anderson and five from Johnston, allowed Arkansas Tech to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win. 
  • Tech's best set offensively came in the second set, as the Golden Suns hit .275 as a team with just seven attack errors. The Suns also limited ECU to a .054 hitting percentage with just seven kills.
  • Arkansas Tech's defense dominated the final game of the match, forcing East Central to commit nine attack errors. The Tigers were only allowed four kills and posted a -.143 hitting percentage in the set. 
  • The Suns hit .265 with a team-low six errors in the second set, taking the match after a 25-12 win. 
  • For the match, Arkansas Tech hit .228, while ECU hit just .037. Tech's 51 kills in the victory are the most in a conference match this season, as five different Golden Suns recorded at least five kills. 

NOTABLES

  • Arkansas Tech's 19-match win streak is the third longest in program history. The Golden Suns are also 6-0 in conference play and have won the past 18 sets.  
  • Anderson led all players with 13 kills, while Johnston followed with 12 kills and a match-high .385 hitting percentage. Tabitha Spray added 10 kills.
  • Amanda Milnick tallied 33 assists to lead both teams, and her 11 digs gives her eight double-doubles on the season. Madison Nagel finished with a match-high 22 digs, while Hunter Eshnaur had 13 and Meredith Darnell had 10.

  • "It was not a pretty match, but we were able to battle through it. We typically rely on strong offensive production. East Central did a great job defending us. They played hard."
  • "Madison Nagel and Meredith Darnell were solid tonight. Their defense and sound ball control helped us stay in the match."
  • "Winning the first set was huge for us. We faced adversity, and we were down for most of the match. We played smart and well under pressure towards the end."
