WONDER BOYS RALLY FROM 23-POINT SECOND-HALF DEFICIT TO TOP UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark.Alex Brown, Justin Graham, and Freddy Lee all scored 19 points, while Bennie Lufile and Trevin Woods both added 10 as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (11-4, 7-4 Great American Conference) rallied from a 23-point second-half deficit to pick up a 91-90 win over the No. 16 Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (14-1, 10-1 GAC) on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Boll Weevils opened the game on a 7-0 run and quickly pulled ahead by double digits, taking an 18-6 lead at the 15:25 mark of the opening half.
  • After UAM stretched its lead to 12 (23-11) Montrell Williams and Freddy Lee buried back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the UAM lead to six (23-17) with 12:15 remaining in the half.
  • The Weevils pushed back ahead and claimed as much as an 18-point (51-33) advantage before settling into half with a 55-39 lead.
  • UAM ran its lead to as many as 23 points (64-41) with 16:09 remaining, and led by 20 (69-49) at the 13:22 mark, but the Wonder Boys went on a 10-0 run to pull to within 10 at the 10:11 mark.
  • UAM pulled to within eight as Alex Brown hit a jumper with 8:50 remaining.
  • With 7:29 to play, Brown buried a 3-pointer from the left wing to pull Tech to within five (75-70).
  • Brown hit another 3-pointer from the corner with 6:01 to play that pulled the Wonder Boys to within two (77-75).
  • After the Boll Weevils hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to four, Justin Graham joined the 3-pointer party and pulled the Wonder Boys to within one (79-78) with 4:55 remaining.
  • On the subsequent possession, Graham hit a fast-break layup to give Tech its first lead of the game at 80-79 with 4:01 remaining.
  • Brown hit a 3-pointer the next trip down the court to push Tech's lead to four (83-79) with 3:43 to play.
  • UAM's Karim Mawuenyega hit a layup with 1:39 to play that gave UAM an 86-85 advantage.
  • With 1:19 to play, Graham hit the back end of a two free throw opportunity to tie the game at 86-86.
  • With 54 seconds on the clock, Freddy Lee hit a 3-pointer to put UAM back ahead 89-86.
  • UAM tied the game on a 3-pointer by Cobe Goosby on its next possession.
  • With the game tied at 89, Bennie Lufile drew a foul underneath the basket and was sent to the line to shoot two. Lufile missed the first, but hit the second to give Tech a 90-89 lead with 18.9 seconds to play.
  • UAM attempted a 3-pointer with 15 seconds to play, the Wonder Boys rebounded and the Boll Weevils fouled again, sending Lufile to the line once more. Lufile made the second shot to stretch Tech's lead to two (91-89) with 9.8 seconds to play.
  • On the subsequent possession, Tech's Freddie Lee was whistled for a loose ball foul with 0.7 seconds to play, sending UAM to the line with the opportunity to tie the game.
  • UAM's Tyrin Jones went to the line and hit the first freebie to pull to within one, but missed the second opportunity and the Wonder Boys pulled down the board to seal the improbable come-from-behind win.
NOTABLES
  • UAM outshot Tech 52.6 to 45.2 percent in the opening half with a 23-14 advantage on the rebounding glass. The Wonder Boys turned around and outshot UAM 64.3 percent to 35.7 percent in the second half with a 20-12 rebounding advantage.
  • The Wonder Boys outscored UAM 52-35 in the second half after being down 55-39 at halftime.
  • UAM outrebounded Tech 35-34, and outscored Tech 50-34 in the paint, 24-12 off turnovers, 16-6 on second-chance points, and 12-4 on fast-break points.
  • The Wonder Boys connected on 13 3-pointers, led by five from the hands of Alex Brown.
