BETHANY, Okla. – Andrew Guillory scored a team-high 16 points, leading a cast of four Arkansas Tech basketball players in double figures, but the Wonder Boys (11-10, 6-9 Great American Conference) were unable to overcome clutch second-half shooting by Southern Nazarene (10-11, 9-6 GAC) in a 67-63 loss to the Crimson Storm on Saturday at the Sawyer Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED- SNU opened up a six-point (14-8) lead over the first eight minutes of the contest, taking that lead at the 12:39 mark of the game.
- The Wonder Boys rallied, and a DeChriston McKinney layup at the 9:06 mark of the opening half gave Arkansas Tech its first lead (17-16) of the game.
- SNU quickly reclaimed the lead and held the lead until Jerry Owens tied the game for Arkansas Tech with a pair of free throws with 50 seconds to play in the half.
- The Crimson Storm reclaimed the lead on the next possession, but Freddy Lee sunk a pair of free throws with three seconds to play in the half to tie the game (32-32) going into the half.
- A 3-pointer by Nick Wayman with 16:59 to play in the second half gave Tech its first lead since the aforementioned 17-16 advantage.
- The two teams traded leads over the next four minutes, but after a 40-40 tie with 13:28 to play, SNU outscored Tech 6-2 over the next three minutes to take a 46-42 lead at the under-12 media timeout (10:14 remaining).
- Tech pulled to within one (49-48) with 8:17 to play, but SNU outscored Tech 7-2 over the next 2:15 to take a six-point (56-50) lead with 5:59 to play.
- With SNU clinging to a six-point lead over the majority of the final minutes of the half, Wayman's 3-pointer brought Tech to within three (64-61) with 27.5 seconds to play.
- The Wonder Boys were forced to foul on the subsequent possession, and SNU hit both free throws to extend its lead back to five (66-61) with 26.4 seconds remaining.
- Tech was able to pull to within three, but SNU would not allow the Wonder Boys to get any closer down the stretch.
NOTABLES- SNU held a 41-38 rebounding advantage and committed just eight turnovers in the contest.
- Tech outshot SNU 41.1 to 38.8 percent, but the turnovers and second-chance opportunities allowed SNU to take nine more shots than the Wonder Boys.
- Guillory was joined in double figures by Wayman (12 points), Tyler Corley (10 points), and Jerry Owens (10 points).
- Bryson Fletcher led Tech with nine rebounds.
COACH KLINE SAYS- On the difference in the game – "It seemed like there was a five or six-minute stretch in the second half where we'd get a stop on the initial shot and give up an offensive rebound. If we did get the ball back we'd turn it over. Those were the keys in the game."
NEXT UP- The Wonder Boys return to Tucker Coliseum on Thursday, Feb. 11 to face off against Ouachita Baptist. A 7:30 p.m. tip is scheduled.
