CORLEY’S BIG NIGHT LEADS WONDER BOYS TO UPSET OF FIRST-PLACE OUACHITA

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Tyler Corley scored 30 points, Mason Cline added 11, while DeChriston McKinney had a 10-point performance as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (12-10, 7-9 Great American Conference) held off the GAC's first-place team, Ouachita Baptist (12-10, 12-4 GAC) 85-73 on Thursday night at Tucker Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  •  Ouachita controlled the pace in the opening minutes of the game, jumping out to a 10-point (14-4) lead just under five minutes into the contest.
  • Tech rallied and knotted the game at 18-18 with 8:39 to play in the half after a layup by DeChriston McKinney.
  • The Wonder Boys twice pushed ahead by six points – the latest time coming at the 2:25 mark of the half (33-27) before OBU closed the gap and knotted the game at 34-34 going into the half.
  • Tech scored the first seven points of the half and led by as many as nine points (45-36) three minutes into the half.
  • OBU was twice able to pull to within three, but the Wonder Boys were able to stretch the lead, finally pulling ahead by double digits (70-60) with 4:01 to play.
  • Tech's final 12-point margin of victory was its largest lead of the contest.

COACH KLINE SAYS
  • On the first three minutes of the second half – "It seems like our last six or seven games – other than the SWOSU game here – we've been tied or had a one or two point game at halftime. We always talk about the first five minutes of the second half – who's gonna win it? Are we going to come out and establish on our home floor or are we going to get down and have to battle the whole time?"
  • On the perimeter defense against the league's top 3-point shooting team – "It was a gamble tonight. Usually in our 2-3 zone we bump the wings with our guards and we decided not to tonight. They whip the ball around the perimeter so fast, and so we decided to stay home. If they run a guy to the corner and make 3's, we're beat anyway. There were only two or three times in the game – and it was late in the second half when they figured out that was what we were going to concede to them, and then they adjusted and we went back to bumping and it as a cat-and-mouse game."
  • On a big steal by Bryson Fletcher early in the second half – "The kid can't even walk… he hasn't even practiced all week. He's basically out there on one leg. His story is unbelievable. His toughness… his character… he's the toughest player I've ever coached, ever. He's an unbelievable person. If you had a team full of him you'd rarely lose. He's one of those guys you hope stays on your staff for a couple years."
