GOLDEN SUNS SHUT DOWN LANE IN SEASON OPENER

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. Cheyenne North scored a team-high 13 points, while Brianna Williams and Ryann Goodsell came off the bench to score 12 points apiece as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns basketball team (1-0) opened its season with an 81-51 win over Lane on Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arkansas Tech opened the game on a 7-0 run over the game's first 3:30.
  • Tech pushed its lead to ten (17-7) with 2:05 to play in the opening quarter. Lane pulled to within four (17-13) with 1:14 to go, but the Golden Suns finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to take an 11-point lead.
  • The Golden Suns' lead continued to grow through the second quarter, with Tech taking its largest lead to that point with 50 seconds remaining in the half (41-21) as Goodsell drained a pair of free throws. That margin carried into the half.  
  • After Tech scored the first five points of the third quarter, the Golden Suns continued to keep Lane at arm's length in the third quarter, pushing ahead by 31 (60-29) after three quarters.
  • Tech took its largest lead of the contest midway through the fourth quarter as Williams buried a 3-pointer with 4:47 to play, giving the Golden Suns a 39-point (74-35) lead.
  • After Lane pulled to within 29 points in the closing minutes, the Golden Suns stretched the lead back above 30 before taking the 30-point win.
NOTABLES
  • Tech outscored Lane 12-2 in the paint, 7-0 on second-chance baskets, and 8-2 on fast-break points in the opening quarter.
  • The Golden Suns continued to be dominant in the paint in the second quarter, outscoring Lane 14-4.
  • Tech again outscored Lane 12-2 in the paint in the third quarter.
  • The Golden Suns held an overall advantage of 50-14 on paint points, 27-6 on second-chance points, and 20-6 on fast break points.
  • Tech held Lane to just eight points in both the second and third quarters.
  • Tech outrebounded Lane 56-31, led by a game-high nine boards from D'Rae Tullock. North and Danielle Frachiseur added eight apiece.
  • North and Kylie Ladd both had a team-best four assists as the Golden Suns picked up assists on 21 of 32 baskets.
