REDDIES OUTLAST WONDER BOYS

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. Jabyes Cross turned in a 15-for-19 passing performance, throwing for 184 yards, while Bryan Allen rushed for 97 yards and D'Vonta Derricott turned in a 11-tackle performance, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (2-3) was unable to complete the comeback against the No. 7 Henderson State Reddies (5-0), falling 27-20 on Family Day on Saturday at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.

NOTABLES
  • The two teams traded scores on the opening two drives of the contest, with HSU claiming a 10-7 lead after the opening quarter after a Ray field goal.
  • HSU took advantage of a Tech turnover on the ensuing possession, returning an interception 28 yards to the Tech 27-yard line to start a four-play drive that saw the Reddies stretch their lead to 17-7.
  • After a three-and-out by the Wonder Boys, HSU tacked on another field goal to pull ahead 20-7.
  • Tech cut its deficit to 10 points (20-10) as Perez drilled a 39-yarder as time expired in the half.
  • After a defensive stop on the opening possession of the second half, the Reddies scored a critical touchdown on its first drive of the second half to extend the lead to 27-10.   
  • The Wonder Boys seemed primed to cut into the deficit on the next possession, driving to the Henderson one-yard line, but the Reddies defensive front held firm and stopped the Wonder Boys' drive with just inches to go to the goal line.
  • Tech was able to force a three-and-out on the next possession, and take advantage of solid field position to set up a field goal by Eric Perez to narrow the deficit to 27-13.
  • The defenses held firm throughout the fourth quarter, with the Wonder Boys able to pull to within seven as Cross connected with Davis on a 31-yard route in the closing minutes.
  • The Reddies sealed the win after recovering the Wonder Boys' onside kick attempt with just over a minute to play.
  • The Wonder Boys outgained HSU 377-354, putting up 190 rushing yards against HSU's stellar rush defense that had allowed just 89.8 yards per game entering the contest.
  • Both teams did a solid job on third downs, with Tech converting 8-of-18 and HSU converting 6-of-15.
  • Tech converted three of four third downs.
  • The two teams made the most of their red zone opportunities, with the Reddies converting on five-of-five and the Wonder Boys converting on three-of-four.
