DENTON, Texas –
Hunter Eshnaur turned in a 19-kill day, while
Madison Nagel chipped in 38 digs as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns volleyball team (2-2) salvaged a split on the final day of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic, falling 3-0 to Texas Woman's before sweeping past Texas A&M-Commerce in the event finale.
In the opener, TWU downed Tech by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-19.
"We started off really high error again against Texas Woman's," said head coach
Kristy Bayer. "Our passing and defense was strong, but we struggled with offensive consistency."
Eshnaur had nine kills in the opener, while
Katie Huff turned in eight.
Sarita Stegall dished out 23 assists, and
Madison Nagel added 23 digs. While Tech hit a respectable .250 in the opening set, TWU's offense outpaced the Golden Suns' with a .441 percentage in the same set.
In the finale, the Golden Suns edged TAMU-Commerce in the opening set 26-24 before winning 25-23 and 25-20 decisions in sets two and three to clinch the match.
"We were able to rebound against Commerce," added Bayer. "Our offense looked dynamic, and we were able to spread the ball around."
Eshnaur's 10 kills led all players, while Huff hit .438 with a nine-kill performance.
McCall Wilkins and
Kaylee Konsella both hit over .300 and had eight kills each.
Alyssa Kool dished out 23 assists and Stegall added 19, while Nagel had a match-high 15 digs.
The Golden Suns had seven service aces in the winning effort, led by Nagel's three.
Kaci Jackson added two.
"Overall, it was a good evaluation of what we need to work on," said Bayer. "I see a lot of talent and athleticism from this group, we just have to work on cutting down our attacking errors and playing better out of system."
Eshnaur represented Tech on the all-tournament team.
The Golden Suns return to action this Friday and Saturday, hosting the Arkansas Tech Tournament at Tucker Coliseum and squaring off against Midwestern State, Newman, Missouri Southern, and Ouachita Baptist. A complete tournament schedule will be released this week on arkansastechsports.com.
