RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Freshman
Hunter Eshnaur put together a pair of double-doubles and
Sarita Stegall added 50 assists as the Arkansas Tech women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the Arkansas Tech Tournament Friday at Tucker Coliseum.
Tech (3-3) put together a four-set victory (25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15) over Midwestern State (4-4) in the first match of the day. Eshnaur turned in a 15-kill performance while hitting .290, and added 11 digs and three blocks. Sophomore
McCall Wilkins hit .304 with 10 kills and five blocks, with sophomore
Alyssa Kool and freshman Stegall each tallying 24 assists in the win.
The Golden Suns started the match off going back and forth with the Mustangs, with eight different ties through a draw at 10-10. From there, a block from
Katie Huff and
Rachel Hampton, along with a kill from Hampton and two MSU errors gave Tech the lead for good, and it would score 15 of the set's final 21 points for the win.
The second set remained close throughout, with Tech holding the lead or tied for all but one point, but never leading by more than three points. It was tied as late as 16-16, but back-to-back kills from Eshnaur and Wilkins gave the Suns an edge they would hold onto.
After a tough third set that resulted in a loss, Tech rebounded in the fourth, hitting .382 as a team to wrap up the win. Tied at 7-7, the Suns rolled off 11 straight points, with six coming from kills and three from blocks. Eshnaur posted two kills and two blocks during the run, and five kills, two blocks and an ace in the set.
Tech couldn't find its footing in its nightcap against Newman (4-4), jumping out to a 17-12 lead before the Jets mounted a comeback and took the match in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-22). Eshnaur turned in a second straight double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Kaylee Konsella added nine kills and the Golden Suns' only ace of the match, while Nagel turned in 14 digs and Huff and
Haley Owen combined for 12 kills.
The tournament continues Saturday with five more games at Tucker Coliseum. The Golden Suns face Missouri Southern at 11 a.m. before closing the tournament with a nonconference duel against Ouachita Baptist at 5 p.m.
