Box Score DURANT, Okla. –
Clarence Willard buried a 35-footer as time expired as part of a 17-point, 13-rebound, 10-assist performance as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (13-13, 9-9 Great American Conference) rallied from a 12-point deficit with 5:59 to play to capture a thrilling 77-76 win over Southeastern Oklahoma (13-13, 9-9 Great American Conference) on Saturday at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
The senior's triple-double is the third recorded in program history, following Dustin Smith, who accomplished the feat on Jan. 23, 2003 against Arkansas Baptist, and Laithe Massey, who accomplished his on Jan. 27, 2011 against Harding.
The opening minutes of the game saw
Mike Balogun stretch the Wonder Boys' lead to five (15-10) after a 3-pointer at the 13:24 mark. The Savage Storm fought back, claiming a 17-16 lead with 10:58 to play. Southeastern pushed its lead to four (28-24) with 4:19 to play in the half, but the Wonder Boys closed the first half on a 6-0 run to take a two-point (30-28) lead into the half.
SE's Trevor Jackson quickly tied the contest in the opening seconds of the second half, but the Wonder Boys quickly reclaimed the lead, stretching ahead by as many as four points (38-34) after a Willard layup at the 17:15 mark. The Savage Storm reclaimed the lead, and after
Jay Murphy's layup with 12:48 to play put the Wonder Boys ahead 50-49, Southeastern reeled off an 11-0 run to pull ahead by ten (60-50) with 9:50 to play.
The Storm would lead by as many as 12 (68-56) with 5:59 to play.
The Wonder Boys scored the next six points of the game to cut the deficit in half (68-62) with 4:05 to play after a 3-pointer by
Tyler Friedel, and after SE's Anton Cook buried a pair of free throws to push the Savage Storm ahead by eight (70-62) with 3:07 to play, Tech used a 7-0 run to cut the Savage Storm lead to one (70-69) with 1:53 to play.
The Savage Storm pushed ahead and led by four points (75-71) with 26 seconds remaining, but with five seconds to play, Friedel buried another clutch 3-pointer from the
corner to pull the Wonder Boys within one (75-74) with 4.2 seconds to play.
On the ensuing inbound, the Wonder Boys were forced to foul, sending Southeastern's Sami Bzai to the line to shoot two with 3.0 seconds to play. Bzai missed the first but connected on the second, and with both teams out of timeouts, the inbounds pass to Willard found its target. Willard stepped across the half-court line and let his game-winning shot fly just before the buzzer. A video review confirmed that the shot left Willard's hand before the final buzzer, and the Wonder Boys celebrated the hard-fought victory.
D.J. Jethroe had a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double to complement Willard's triple-double, while Friedel added 14 points and Balogun added 10 in the victory.
The Wonder Boys will play their final home contest of the 2014-15 season on Thursday, Feb. 26, hosting Harding at Tucker Coliseum. A 7:30 p.m. tip is scheduled. Live video, statistics, and audio are available at www.arkansastechsports.com.
