RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Tech men's and women's basketball teams will wrap up their final multigame roadtrip of the regular season, swinging into Durant, Oklahoma for a Great American Conference doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma at 1 and 3 Saturday afternoon.
The No. 20 Golden Suns (19-4, 14-3 GAC), who have already clinched their berth in the conference tournament in early March, are facing a second top-four GAC team in three days as they meet the Savage Storm (17-8, 10-7 GAC) in the early tipoff. Tech controlled the pace early and earned an 86-75 victory at Tucker Coliseum Jan. 15, getting a pair of 20-point scorers and pushing four players into double digits to push the all-time series lead to 9-4, 7-2 since GAC play began.
Anissa Pounds turned in one of her best games of the season, nailing 5-of-8 3-pointers for 21 points, hauling in a game-high nine rebounds and swiping three steals.
Fatima Adams led all scorers with 22, and pulled in eight boards, while
Katrina Hayden added 15 points and three assists, while
Jacinda Myers-Sanders posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
The loss to the Golden Suns came in the midst of a four-game skid for Southeastern, but since Jan. 26, the Storm have won five of seven, averaging 72.1 points per game along the way. A big part of that offense comes from beyond the arc, as SOSU hits 3s at a 35.8-percent clip, making 9.2 a game, best in the league and fourth in Division II. They made 12 in the first game against Tech, with sharpshooter Olivia Potter — who leads the GAC in both 3s made and 3-point percentage — nailing 4-of-7 on her way to 15 points. The Storm also gets plenty of production from Emily Williams, who is fourth in the conference averaging 18.4 points per game, and also hauls in 7.5 rebounds and adds 3.0 assists per outing. Kaylie Baxter puts up 8.3 points and 6.8 boards per game.
Tech is coming off a tough 66-56 loss to East Central Thursday night, in which the Golden Suns went down by 10 at the break, got as close as down one with less than six minutes to play, but couldn't finish off the comeback. Adams posted 20 points and 14 rebounds—her 11th double-double of the year—while Pounds put up 16 points, six rebounds and two steals. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Suns, their third run of at least four games this season, and brought them back into a tie for first in the GAC with Harding. With her 14th 20-point game of the year, Adams pushed back to the top of the scoring list in the league, averaging 21.3 points, and her 9.8 boards per game is third. Pounds is ninth in scoring at 13.0, while Hayden is dishing out a league-best 3.9 assists.
The Wonder Boys (12-13, 8-9 GAC) suffered a 74-63 setback Jan. 15, as the hot-shooting Savage Storm (13-12, 9-8 GAC) hit 54.2 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from deep to hold any Tech comeback attempt at bay.
Mike Balogun netted 20 points, three rebounds and three assists in the game, with
Tyler Friedel popping 5-of-8 from 3-point range for 17 points.
Clarence Willard added five points and team-highs with seven rebounds and four assists, while
Jay Murphy added an all-around effort with eight points, four boards, three assists and a pair of steals as the Storm earned their first win at Tucker Coliseum in GAC play and inched closer in the all-time series, 12-9.
Southeastern, which owns a road win over Division I bubble team Tulsa in early December, is 5-4 in the nine games since facing the Wonder Boys, but has won three of its last four. The Storm get production from their entire starting five, starting with Taylor Smaller, who averages 16.3 points and 3.6 assists per game, and Danny Powell, who puts up 15.6 points and 6.9 rebounds. Those two, who are sixth and seventh in the GAC in scoring, combined for 46 points in the early win over the Wonder Boys, adding nine rebounds and three assists. Sami Bzai goes for 11.0 points and nearly three assists a game, and hits 2.2 triples a game at a 45.1-percent clip. Darius Harris averages 9.4 points, on 55-percent shooting, and a GAC-best 9.0 rebounds, while Antoino Worthy comes off the bench to average 6.8 points, 5.9 boards and nearly two blocks per game in just 17.4 minutes.
The 20 points he poured in against Southeastern in January kickstarted a solid run for Balogun over the past 10 games. The senior has put up double digits in all but two of those games, netting 20-plus in four games, and is averaging 16.7 points per game over the stretch. He's still the lone Wonder Boy averaging double figures, but four others put up at least 8.2 per game or better, starting with Willard, who adds 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists. His numbers are even better over the past six games, with 9.8 points, 4.8 boards and 4.3 helpers.
Both games will be carried live on KWKK (100.9 FM) in Russellville, with live video, audio and statistics available at
