RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Bryan Allen rushed for 132 yards, while
Logan Genz racked up eight tackles, including five for losses, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (7-3, 7-3 Great American Conference) was unable to hold off Southwestern Oklahoma (7-3, 7-3 GAC) as the Bulldogs downed the Wonder Boys 28-14 on Saturday at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
The defenses held for both teams in the opening quarter, but Southwestern Oklahoma broke through in the second, as Carlos Smith hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Marc Evans to cap a seven-play, 60-yard drive and put SWOSU ahead 7-0 with 10:29 to go until the half.
As the Wonder Boys moved the ball downfield on the subsequent drive, Trevon Hartfiel intercepted an
Arsenio Favor pass on the Bulldogs 13-yard line and returned it 37 yards to midfield. On SWOSU's first play from scrimmage, the Bulldogs connected on a 47-yard strike to set up a first-and-goal at the Tech 3-yard line. Karltrell Hende punched it in with 7:46 to play in the half to give SWOSU the 14-0 lead.
The Wonder Boys responded on the next drive, putting together a 12-play, 70-yard sequence capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by Favor to pull Tech to within 14-7 with 3:45 to go in the half.
The score would hold through the half, and the two defenses would trade stops through the third quarter until SWOSU went to the big play, as Evans connected with D.J. Jones on the fourth play of a 90-yard drive to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead in the final minutes of the third quarter.
Arkansas Tech used a 17-play, 69-yard drive capped by a one-yard Favor touchdown run to open the fourth quarter and pull to within 21-14 with 7:45 to play. However, after the Tech defense picked up a big stop, a turnover put the ball in the Bulldogs' hands in Tech territory.
An untimely encroachment penalty on a fourth-and-four situation gave SWOSU new life on the drive, and with the Bulldogs in a fourth-and-seven, Evans connected with Derrick Styles on a 30-yard touchdown pass that gave SWOSU a 28-14 lead, and the Bulldogs held on for the victory.
Allen's 132 yards led all players, while Genz's eight tackles paced the Wonder Boys.
Cua' Rose and
Nick Akins both turned in six tackles. The Wonder Boys outgained SWOSU 390-to-319, and held a 203-43 advantage in rushing yards.
Arkansas Tech concludes the 2015 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14, facing off against Harding in a Senior Day matchup. Kickoff from Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field is set for 2 p.m.
