RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team rallied from a 24-10 fourth-quarter deficit, scoring 17 unanswered points to upend the Harding Bisons 27-24 on Senior Day at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
Harding (7-4) opened the scoring on its first drive, as Tristan Parsley's 34-yard field goal put the Bisons on the board. Harding held the 3-0 lead through the opening quarter, when a fortunate miscue put the Wonder Boys (8-3) ahead.
Arsenio Favor's rush attempt from the Harding three was stopped short when the Bisons' Daylan Skidmore stripped the ball loose at the Harding one-yard line, but the resulting friendly bounce into the end zone was recovered by Tech's
Stephen Watson for the score, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive and resulting in a 7-3 Wonder Boys' lead with 9:33 to play in the half.
The Tech lead was short-lived, however, as Harding took advantage of excellent field position on the next sequence, marching downfield 64 yards over 12 plays, capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Michael Latu that saw the BIsons take a 10-7 lead with just over three minutes to play in the half.
An errant punt by the Wonder Boys again gave Harding excellent field possession, as the Bisons started their final drive of the half on the Tech 37-yard line with 1:28 to play. Harding used just 21 seconds to go the 37 yards, as Park Parish connected with Vanard Placide on a 28-yard touchdown strike to put the Bisons ahead 17-7 with just over a minute to play in the half.
The score would carry through the half, and the Wonder Boys would cut the margin to 17-10 as
Eric Perez drilled a 40-yard field goal on the first drive of the half.
However, Harding responded yet again on the next drive, taking advantage of a 49-yard kickoff return to again start a drive in Wonder Boys' territory. The Bisons took just under three minutes to march downfield, using six plays capped by a four-yard run by Michael Latu to pull ahead 24-10 with 9:10 to play in the third quarter.
The defenses traded stops through the third quarter, and Harding appeared poised to put the game out of reach on the opening drive of the fourth quarter, driving to the Wonder Boys' six-yard line. However, a sack and a false start pushed the Bisons back to the 24 and set up a 39-yard field goal attempt.
The snap was off-target on the field goal attempt, and Tech's
Nick Akins scooped the loose ball and took it 67 yards for a touchdown to pull the Wonder Boys to within 24-17.
Tech's defense forced a three-and-out on the next Harding drive, and the Wonder Boys again chipped into the Bisons' lead as Perez connected on his second field goal of the day, a 36-yard attempt that pulled the Wonder Boys to within 24-20 with 6:38 to play.
Again, Harding would have the benefit of excellent field possession on its subsequent drive, but the Wonder Boys stood tall, coming up with a big stop on fourth-and-one to get the ball back on the Tech 46 with 4:11 to play.
On fourth-and-12, Favor connected with
Jermaine Murdock deep in Harding territory, setting up a first-and-goal at the Harding four-yard line. Two plays later,
Bryan Allen punched in the go-ahead score with 1:26 to play, and the Wonder Boys once again picked up the big defensive stop to hold on for the victory.
Favor completed 12 of 24 passes for 182 yards, while Allen led the Wonder Boys with 55 yards on the ground. Defensively,
Bruce Livingston and
Logan Genz both turned in 13-tackle efforts while
Jaquirous Jackson added 12 tackles in the winning effort.
The win ends the regular season for the Wonder Boys, with a postseason opportunity of some variety remaining a possibility. Visit
