RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Two of the five winningest programs in the history of Division II women's basketball will take to the hardwood on Sunday, when the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns square off against the Delta State Lady Statesmen at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
THE BACKSTORYArkansas Tech entered the 2015-16 season as the second-winningest program in Division II history with 934 total wins. Delta State ranked No. 5 with 888 total wins. The Golden Suns have two national titles to their credit, while Delta State has claimed six - three under legendary head coach Margaret Wade (namesake of the Wade Trophy, awarded annually to the top collegiate women's basketball player in the nation) and three under Lloyd Clark, whose name adorns the court inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.
THE SERIESArkansas Tech and Delta State will play the 48th meeting all-time between the two schools, with the series led by DSU 27-21. The two programs first met on the court in 1993 with the Golden Suns picking up a 70-61 win at Tucker Coliseum. The two teams played twice that month with Tech picking up the win in both games, and then the series went on hiatus until the 1996 season when Arkansas Tech joined the Gulf South Conference. The series continued through the 2010-11 season, when Arkansas Tech joined the Great American Conference. The series resumed last season with a 72-61 win for the Golden Suns at Tucker Coliseum.
HOME COURT CARRIESThe home team has a decided advantage in this series - DSU leads 14-4 in games played in Cleveland, while Tech leads 13-6 in games played in Russellville.
