GOLDEN SUNS ROLL TO WIN OVER SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Bre Brooks poured in 25 points, Danielle Frachiseur added 18 and Fatima Adams notched 16 points and 14 rebounds as the No. 18 Arkansas Tech women's basketball team opened Great American Conference play with a 94-73 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • An Anissa Pounds layup tied things up at 2-2 for Tech (2-0, 1-0 GAC) after the hosts scored the first basket of the game, and Brooks netted seven straight points over the next three minutes to boost the lead to 9-2.
  • A Calli White jumper and another Brooks trey made it a 14-0 run, and a 12-point lead, for the Suns at the 5:34 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Bulldogs (0-3, 0-1 GAC) would end the opening quarter on a 10-5 run, but a Brooks jumper in the final seconds gave the senior 17 points in the frame and the Suns a 29-18 lead.
  • Four straight points from Aujana Dawkins early in the second pushed the lead to 15, and a Tierani Richardson 3-pointer made it 38-22 just 55 seconds into the quarter.
  • Adams gave the Suns their biggest lead of the first half at 42-24 with 7:37 left, but SWOSU ended the half on a hot streak, scoring 15 of the final 21 points to pull it to 48-39 at the break.
  • The Tech lead jumped back to double digits — and would stay that way for the rest of the contest — after Pounds knocked down her first triple of the game just over a minute into the third quarter to make it 53-41.
  • A pair of free throws by Pounds and an Adams lay-in made it 57-42 in favor of the Suns at the 6:34 mark, and the lead would fluctuate from 13 to 17 over the next 11 minutes.
  • Two pairs of freebies from Frachiseur around a Pounds 3-pointer handed Tech an 86-66 advantage with three minutes left in the game, and four points from White gave the Suns their final, and largest, lead.

NOTABLES

  • Brooks netted 17 over her game-high 25 points in the first quarter, going 6-of-9 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and 3-of-3 from the line in the opening stanza.
  • Frachiseur, after taking just one shot in the first half, made 7-of-8 from the floor and went a perfect 4-of-4 on free throws to score all 18 of her points in the second half. It was the junior's highest scoring night since also going for 18 late in the 2013-14 season against Ouachita Baptist.
  • The Suns led for over 39 minutes, and trailed for just nine seconds while the Bulldogs were up 2-0 early.
  • Tech had committed just six turnovers on the night, while forcing 14 out of the hosts, and picked up assists on 16 of its 34 field goals.
  • Brooks added a game-high six assists and picked up four rebounds and three steals.
  • Pounds made it four Suns in double figures with 14 points and added seven boards, while White chipped in with eight points and Dawkins pulled in six rebounds.

COACH WILBERS SAYS

  • On limiting turnovers – "I knew we didn't turn it over much. It was a fast-paced game, and we knew it was going to be. Our players did a good job of playing their roles. Both teams hit a little bit of the fatigue factor in the second quarter, and our team was able to overcome it. We were very efficient on offense."
  • On Bre Brooks' first quarter – "Well they were backing off of her, and Bre is one of our best shooters. Give her the shot and she'll take it. They were giving her a lot of space, and I just told her to shoot. She has so much to her game and I'm proud of her."
  • On Danielle Frachiseur's second half – "Dani is a very good player, and she's been getting better and better. She's fantastic off the bench. We have a lot of good players that probably could start, and she's one of those that gives us a spark off the bench."

WHO'S NEXT

  • The Golden Suns continue their conference-opening roadtrip with a 1 p.m. meeting against Northwestern Oklahoma in Alva Saturday.
