Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

WONDER BOYS FALL TO SWOSU IN GAC OPENER

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Senior DeChriston McKinney netted 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while classmate Nick Wayman added 10 points and seven rebounds as the Arkansas Tech men's basketball team fell 88-63 on the road to Southwestern Oklahoma to start Great American Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wayman scored the first eight points for Tech (1-2, 0-1 GAC) hitting a layup to tie things even at 2-2 early and then hitting back-to-back 3-pointers on Freddy Lee assists to draw even at 8-8 with 13:23 to go in the half.
  • Four points from Marquis Yates and a Thomas Alexander bucket helped the Wonder Boys on a 6-2 run to make it 25-16 at the 7:24 mark.
  • A Tobe Okafor lay-in pulled the guests to within 12 at 30-18, but the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 GAC) ran off 12 straight points over a two-plus minute span to open up their lead.
  • The Wonder Boys went on a quick 7-0 run on a Jerry Owens 3-pointer, an Alexander basket and two free throws from Lee to help close the gap by the break.
  • Tech got off to a solid start in the second half, with a Bryson Fletcher layup, a three-point play from Yates and a trey out of Tyler Corley cutting the lead to 13 at 46-33 just over three minutes into the half.
  • McKinney trimmed the advantage to 13 two more times, first with a basket at the 15:16 mark and then with a pair of free throws with 13:14 remaining.
  • The Bulldogs took advantage at the line to boost their lead once again, going 13-of-14 over a five-minute stretch to boost the lead to 71-43 with 7:59 to play.

NOTABLES

  • The double-double for McKinney was the first of his Tech career, as he set a career high in rebounds and added his top scoring output since going for 12 points against Angelo State last November.
  • Twelve different players saw time for the Wonder Boys, with 11 scoring points. Alexander netted eight points and had two steals, while Yates and Andrew Guillory each added seven points and three rebounds.
  • Tech outrebounded its opponent for the third time in three tries this season, grabbing 42 boards to SWOSU's 41.
  • The Bulldogs went 34-of-47 at the free throw line, including 24-of-33 in the second half to help hold on to its lead.

COACH KLINE SAYS

  • On playing on the road – "I tried to explain to the guys how difficult it is playing on the road. I think some of our guys thought we were pretty good after the opening weekend at home, but I told them every time we get on the road, you're going to get the other team's best effort. I don't know if they bought into that, and it showed up right from the get-go."
  • On McKinney and Wayman – "You look at our two guys that led us in scoring and rebounding, and they're two of our returners. They know how tough it is to come on the road, especially when you get into league play."
  • On getting ready for the next game – "Hopefully we get it corrected quick, because we're back at it Saturday afternoon. For the most part, I thought our attitude was good. With 11 new guys, you have to get your attitude and effort right, and we had that. So I expect us to be a lot better Saturday."

WHO'S NEXT

  • The Wonder Boys close out their first roadtrip of the season with a 3 p.m. tip against Northwestern Oklahoma in Alva Saturday.
