ALVA, Okla. — Brayden Stringer ran for 155 yards on 14 carries,
Bryan Allen turned in a 21-carry, 148-yard, two-score effort, and
Arsenio Favor completed 11 of 16 passes for 163 yards as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (7-2, 7-2 Great American Conference) racked up 535 yards of total offense in a 53-21 win over Northwestern Oklahoma (3-6, 3-6 GAC) on Saturday at Ranger Field.
The win, coupled with Harding's loss at Southwestern Oklahoma gives Arkansas Tech sole possession of second place in the GAC, one game behind first-place Henderson State.
The Wonder Boys jumped ahead in the first quarter as Favor connected with
Michael Fine on a 20-yard touchdown strike, capping a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive and giving Tech a 7-0 lead with 6:10 to play in the opening quarter. Tech extended its lead to 10-0 later in the quarter as
Eric Perez drilled a 31-yard field goal with 1:25 to play.
The second quarter saw Tech extend its lead, as Allen found the end zone at the end of a 27-yard run, followed by a two-point conversion that gave Tech an 18-0 lead. The Tech lead was pushed to 25-0 when Favor connected with
Terrez Hampton on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 7:57 to play in the half.
NWOSU got on the scoreboard at the 4:03 mark as Reid Miller connected with Arte' Miura Jr. on a seven-yard touchdown pass with 4:03 to play, cutting the Wonder Boys' lead to 25-7. However, Tech added another score before halftime as Favor connected with
J.V. Davis on a 12-yard strike with 2:55 to play, going into the break with a 32-7 advantage.
Tech grew its lead in the second half as Allen capped a five-play, 73-yard drive with a 49-yard touchdown run that saw the Wonder Boys pull ahead 39-7.
The Rangers cut into the Tech lead, as Miller connected with Horatio Smith twice – first from 70 yards out and the second time from nine yards out – to pull to within 39-21 with 6:27 to go in the third quarter, but Arkansas Tech responded on the next drive as Favor found Davis once again, this time for a 49-yard touchdown strike that saw Tech take a 47-21 lead after another two-point conversion.
Tech tacked on some insurance points late in the fourth quarter as
Juan Ardley's 21-yard touchdown run pushed the Tech advantage to its final 53-21 score.
Cua' Rose led Arkansas Tech with nine tackles, while
Trevon Gooden and
Kristen Trammell both picked up interceptions in the win.
Jerry Henry had five tackles, including two sacks.
The Wonder Boys return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma. Kickoff from Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field is set for 2 p.m.
