Game Recap: Football |

WONDER BOYS CALM SAVAGE STORM

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.Kristian Thompson rushed for 105 yards and four touchdowns, Bryan Allen rushed for 158 yards, while Arsenio Favor completed 12 of 18 passes for 179 yards as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys offense struck early and often in a 57-37 win over Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday.

"Our offense did an outstanding job," said Wonder Boys head coach Raymond Monica. "We rushed the football for 380 yards, were 12-for-18 passing. Obviously there's one pass we'd like to take back. We knew (Southeastern) wouldn't quit."

After the first offensive drive fizzled, the Wonder Boys (6-2, 6-2 Great American Conference) took advantage of a special teams miscue by the Savage Storm to reclaim the football deep in Savage Storm territory. Four plays later, Thompson found the end zone for the first time on a 10-yard touchdown run that gave the Wonder Boys a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

The Savage Storm came back on the next possession, marching 82 yards downfield in seven plays, capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Polite to Bryce Steele. However, with an opportunity to tie the game with an extra point, Jarrett Clayton blocked the attempt, and Cua' Rose scooped the loose ball and took it 98 yards for the defensive PAT, giving Tech a 9-6 lead with 9:42 to play in the opening quarter.
Thompson's second touchdown run came on the next drive, as the freshman found the end zone from six yards out to push the Wonder Boys' lead to 16-6.

After a defensive stop, the Wonder Boys extended their lead yet again as Favor connected with Chris Eastburn on a 57-yard touchdown pass that gave the Wonder Boys a 23-6 lead with 37 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The second quarter saw the Wonder Boys stretch their lead even further, as Allen found the end zone from 15 yards out, giving Tech a 29-6 lead with 13:29 to play in the half. However, the Savage Storm would use a pair of quick strikes to get back into the game. SE's Ronnie Green found the end zone from 23 yards out to cut the Tech lead to 29-13, and Raheem Wilson returned an interception on the subsequent Tech drive 64 yards for the score to bring the Savage Storm to within 29-20 with 9:28 to play in the half.

"We were up by 20, and they've been down by that much and came back," said Monica. "We knew that they always put themselves in position to win. They are a much better football team than their record would indicate."

However, the Wonder Boys reclaimed momentum on the next drive, taking advantage of good field position to reach the end zone once again. This time, it was Favor finding the end zone with his feet, sneaking in from two yards out to stretch the Tech lead to 36-20 with 5:30 to play in the half.

Tech tacked on another score in the final minute of the half, as Thompson's one-yard touchdown strike capped a 11-play, 77-yard drive.

The Savage Storm chipped into the Tech lead in the third quarter, using a 31-yard field goal by Joel Carlos and a 3-yard touchdown pass from Polite to Kieron Hardrick to cut the Wonder Boys' lead to 43-30 with 5:33 to play in the quarter. However, Favor connected with Luke Starks on an acrobatic 14-yard touchdown pass that gave Tech a 50-30 advantage.

Green found the end zone again for the Savage Storm in the fourth quarter, but Thompson found the end zone for the fourth time with 2:22 to play to set the game's score at its final margin.

Logan Genz led all players with 18 tackles. Alonzo Joyner turned in a nine-tackle performance, while Rose added to his defensive PAT with seven tackles and an interception.

The Wonder Boys return to action next Saturday, playing their final road game of the 2015 season at Northwestern Oklahoma. A 2 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
