RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Trying to bounce back from road defeats, the Arkansas Tech men's and women's basketball teams will look to get back on a run with a Great American Conference doubleheader Saturday at Ouachita Baptist.
The Golden Suns (15-3, 10-2 GAC) will try to respond after suffering their second league loss, 57-52 to Southern Arkansas Thursday. The Tigers (7-12, 3-9 GAC) enter following a 73-52 loss to Arkansas-Monticello Thursday. Tech won the first meeting this season 84-54 at Tucker Coliseum, and the two sides have split the series in each of the past two seasons following a 12-game winning streak by the Suns.
Katrina Hayden led ATU with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the first matchup, while
Anissa Pounds added 13 points and four steals.
Fatima Adams chipped in with 12 points and 13 rebounds, with
Mary Crow collecting 13 points and seven boards. Adams continues to lead the GAC in scoring at 21.2 points per game, good enough for 11th in the country. As a team, the Golden Suns are third in the nation in field goal percentage at 47.8, and ninth in scoring with 79.4 points per game. Both those marks are tops in the Great American Conference.
OBU comes in with one of the top 3-point shooting lineups in the league, averaging 7.3 makes from deep per game. Breanna Harris is the Tigers' leading scorer at 12.7 points per game, while Katie Kapler adds 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds.
The Wonder Boys (9-11, 5-7 GAC) are coming off a 109-80 loss to conference co-leader SAU, and will face the other co-leader in the Tigers (13-4, 9-3 GAC). Tech couldn't complete a comeback attempt in the second half during the teams' first meeting, falling 64-57. OBU enters on a two-game winning streak after topping Southern Arkansas and UAM, while Tech has claimed 10 of the past 15 meetings in this series.
Tech pushed three players into double figures in the first matchup, as
Mike Balogun posted 16 points,
Nick Wayman added 14 and six rebounds, and
Bryson Fletcher chipped in with 10 points and eight assists. The Tigers have the league's largest scoring margin, outscoring opponents by 9.4 per game. They're led by Tirrell Brown's 17.7 points, third in the league, with Colt Fason (13.9), Justin McCleary (12.1) and Micah Delph (10.8) all averaging double figures.
