Nick Wayman turned in a 17-point performance, grabbing eight rebounds,
Darrick Little added 15 points, while
Clarence Willard scored 12 points as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (7-6, 3-2 Great American Conference) picked up a 76-63 win over the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (3-6, 1-5 GAC) on Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.
The 3-pointer was working early for the Wonder Boys, as
Tyler Friedel opened scoring with a long-range bucket and then Wayman added two more to push UAM to an early 9-0 lead.
The lead would hold through the opening half, with Tech pushing ahead by as many as 10 points (28-18) with 5:16 to play in the opening half. However, the Boll Weevils would rally and pull to within three (35-32) at halftime as Sharif Hudson hit a jumper at the buzzer.
After Wayman hit a quick layup at the 18:59 mark, UAM used a 6-0 run to claim its first lead of the contest (38-37) at the 16:50 mark as Jamal Peterson hit a pair of free throws. The lead was short-lived, as Willard buried a 3-pointer just 19 seconds later to put the Wonder Boys back ahead.
The lead would hold for the Wonder Boys, who gradually pushed ahead, once again reaching a double-digit lead (58-48) with 8:24 to play in the contest. UAM would twice cut its deficit to six, but the Wonder Boys would push the lead out to as many as 15 points (76-61) in the final minute of play.
Tech held a 42.1 to 36.4 percent advantage from the floor, while the Wonder Boys shot 50 percent from long-range on 7-of-14 shooting while UAM was held to just 19 percent (4-21). Tech shot 72.4 percent from the free-throw line while UAM was at 52.4 percent, while the Boll Weevils held a 45-41 advantage on the rebounding glass, led by D'Audrio Patton's 19 boards.
Tech committed just 11 turnovers on the contest, holding a 16-2 advantage in points off turnovers. Tech held a 34-32 advantage in points in the paint, while UAM held a 20-13 advantage in second-chance points. Tech held a 42-25 advantage in bench points.
Arkansas Tech returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 8, traveling to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma.
