RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Kicking off a three-game road trip over the next 10 days, the Arkansas Tech men's and women's basketball teams head to Southern Arkansas Thursday for a Great American Conference doubleheader.
The No. 15/20 Golden Suns (15-2, 10-1 GAC) got back on the winning track Saturday with an 82-73 victory over Henderson State to kick off the second half of the conference season. They'll look to push that streak to two games in the 5:30 p.m. tip against the Muleriders (4-12, 2-9 GAC), who have dropped nine straight, starting with Tech's 87-81 win Dec. 13. Tech has won the last 18 meetings in the series.
SAU, which puts up 64.1 points per game, is led by Chanel Miller's 12.4 and Rosa Bryant's 12.3 averages. Tierra Tucker adds 9.4 points per game to the mix, and five other players average better than four points per game. Bryant hauls in 6.1 rebounds per game, while Miller grabs 4.3 and Miranda Grier 4.2. Nine Muleriders have at least 10 steals on the season, including Bryant, Tucker, Grier and Allie Wade with 20-plus, helping the squad to the second-highest mark in the GAC with 10.7 swipes per game. Only Tech is higher with 10.8. SAU can also get after second-chance points, grabbing 14.0 offensive rebounds per game, just behind the Suns for the top mark in the league.
After shooting 50 percent or better in five of its last eight games, Tech has shot up to third nationally in field goal percentage at 47.8. That's led to a 79.4 scoring average, top in the GAC and ninth-best in the country, while outscoring opponents by an average of 17.2, which is second in the conference and 14th in Division II.
Fatima Adams continues to lead the charge for the Suns, putting up at least 22 points in four of the past five games while leading the league with 21.3 points per game, which is also 11th-best in the country.
Anissa Pounds and
Katrina Hayden also average double figures at 13.4 and 10.9, respectively, and both help on one of the top distributing teams in the league, with Hayden first in the GAC with 3.9 assists per game and Pounds fourth averaging 3.1.
The Wonder Boys (9-10, 5-6 GAC) will try to keep their recent strong play going in the 7:30 p.m. tip against the Muleriders (12-5, 8-3 GAC), who are part of a three-way tie for first place after falling to Ouachita Baptist Saturday to snap a seven-game winning streak. Tech's 77-75 victory Dec. 13 — in which the Wonder Boys powered back from an eight-point second-half deficit — was its 100th victory in the series that dates back to the 1926-27 season, and the 15th in the last 16 meetings.
SAU brings a potent offense that averages 75.1 points per game and features two of the top 3-point shooters in the GAC. Chauncy Williams hits from deep at a 40.4-percent clip, averaging 3.24 makes per game, second in the conference and 17th nationally, to help average 12.9 points per game. Jaron Davis leads the Muleriders at 15.7 points per game, hitting 2.59 triples and averaging 34.9 percent from deep, while also dishing out 4.1 assists per game, the second-best number in the league. Alre'k Brown adds 12.8 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per outing, while Tyrell Taylor averages 3.5 assists.
Tech, despite only getting one victory out of it, is on a three-game stretch that's seeing the team playing its best. The Wonder Boys shot 48.4 percent from the field, 46.2 from beyond the arc, averaged 74.6 points and outrebounded their opponents by an average of 4.7 over the past three games, which came against first-place East Central, fourth-place Harding and fifth-place Henderson State.
Mike Balogun is the lone Wonder Boy averaging double figures, at 13.9 per game, hitting 2.79 3s a game, fifth-best in the GAC.
Nick Wayman adds 9.7 points and a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game,
Clarence Willard 9.1 and 3.3 assists, and
D.J. Jethroe 8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Tyler Friedel is up to 8.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game after averaging 18 points and 10.5 rebounds in the pair of games last weekend.
