Box Score LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (2-2) were unable to solve the red-hot offense of the McNeese Cowboys (2-1) dropping a 61-7 decision on Saturday at Louis Bonnette Field at Cowboy Stadium.
The Cowboys, ranked fourth in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision entering play, opened the season against Big Ten powerhouse Nebraska, a game in which the 16
th-ranked Cornhuskers scored the winning points with 20 seconds to play. McNeese carried its momentum through last week's 48-16 win over Prairie View into the opening half of the contest, scoring the first 38 points of Saturday's game and taking a 38-0 lead into halftime.
The Wonder Boys came out strong in the third quarter, however, as linebacker
Logan Genz forced a McNeese fumble on the first play from scrimmage, and
A.J. Harris came up with the loose ball to give Tech the football on the McNeese 36-yard line. Three plays later,
Curt Ceralde connected with
Devin Patterson on a 20-yard touchdown pass to cut the McNeese lead to 38-7 with 13:15 to play in the quarter.
The lost fumble was the first of the season for McNeese, as the Wonder Boys forced the Cowboys into only their second turnover of the year.
However, the Cowboys would slow the Wonder Boys' offense, scoring the final 23 points of the game.
Tech's defense held the seventh-ranked rushing attack in FCS and the top-rated rushing unit in the Southland Conference to 50 yards below its season average.
Kelton Smith had eight carries for 42 yards in the loss, while Genz had nine tackles (six solo, three assisted).
Trevon Gooden added seven solo stops along with an interception.
The Wonder Boys return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, hosting the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils in a 6 p.m. contest at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
