Box Score WEATHERFORD, Okla. –
Logan Genz and
Shai Kobayashi hit double figures in tackles, while
Dennis Robertson passed for 217 yards, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (1-1, 1-1 Great American Conference) was unable to overcome 20 unanswered fourth-quarter points by Southwestern Oklahoma State (1-1, 1-1 GAC), falling 27-23 to the Bulldogs on Saturday at Fast Lane Field.
Early on, the Wonder Boys controlled the pace as
Brayden Stringer opened scoring with a 18-yard touchdown run with 5:50 to play in the opening quarter.
Randy Velazquez booted home a pair of field goals in the second quarter, the first from 41 yards out and the second from 24 yards to extend the Arkansas Tech lead to 13-0.
SWOSU took advantage of a defensive miscue to get on the board in the second quarter. After an incomplete pass would have set up a third-and-long, the Wonder Boys were penalized for a late hit that gave the Bulldogs a first down on the Tech 12-yard line. SWOSU capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown run by Karl Hodge on the next play to pull within 13-7 with 1:59 to play until halftime.
The Wonder Boys came back quickly, however, using a 13-play, 80-yard drive that spanned just 1:20, capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to
Jabyes Cross that sent Arkansas Tech into the half with a 20-7 lead.
The two defenses traded stops in the third quarter, and the Wonder Boys were finally able to extend their lead on Velazquez's third field goal of the game, this one from 26 yards to push Tech's lead to 23-7.
However, the Wonder Boys went three-and-out on their first possession of the fourth quarter, and SWOSU moved the ball quickly downfield, scoring on a quick pass from Ryley Claborn to Teverick Boyd, pulling the Bulldogs to within 23-13. The Bulldogs caught the Wonder Boys off guard with an onside kick attempt and recovered the ball on their own 47-yard line. Just over three minutes later, Claborn connected with Carlos Smith on a 27-yard touchdown pass that saw the Bulldogs narrow the gap to 23-20 with 5:54 to play.
On the next drive, the Bulldogs' Steven Townley intercepted Robertson's pass on the second play of the possession, returning it 63 yards for the score and giving the Bulldogs a lead that they would hold.
Justyn Oliphant led the Wonder Boys on the ground, carrying 12 times for 65 yards. Stringer had 13 carries for 54 yards, while Cross led Tech with 64 receiving yards.
In addition to Genz's 14 tackles, he had 2.5 stops for losses totaling three yards, while
Quincy Peyton added an interception in the loss.
Arkansas Tech returns to action next Saturday, facing Southern Nazarene in a contest to be played at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
