RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Jacinda Myers-Sanders turned in a 17-point, six-rebound effort, while
Anissa Pounds and
Fatima Adams both added 12 points, but the No. 12 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns basketball team (8-1) was unable to overcome the red-hot second-half shooting of Benedict (5-0), falling 67-60 to the Lady Tigers on Sunday at Tucker Coliseum.
The Golden Suns controlled the early minutes of the contest before Benedict was able to narrow the Tech lead to just one point (19-18) with 7:39 to play. The Golden Suns used a 11-3 run to pull ahead by ten (31-21) with 3:03 to play in the half before taking an eight-point (34-24) lead into the break.
After Tech pushed its lead out to ten (38-28) with 18:49 to play after a layup by
Katrina Hayden, Benedict used an 11-0 run to claim their first lead of the contest (39-38) at the 13:10 mark.
The two teams traded leads over the next five minutes, but a layup by Ta'Narnia Chisley put Benedict ahead 50-49 with 7:41 to play, and the Lady Tigers would not trail again. Benedict led by as many as seven points (64-57) with 1:32 to play, and held on for the victory.
Benedict shot 61 percent from the floor in the second half, and held a 48.1 to 41.7 percent advantage in shooting. Tech held a 34-33 advantage in rebounding, but Benedict took advantage of 22 Tech turnovers to hold a 21-12 advantage in points off turnovers. Benedict used 13 offensive boards and led 14-3 in second-chance points.
Adams added eight boards, while Myers-Sanders contributed six.
Katrina Hayden had a team-best four assists, while Myers-Sanders turned in three blocks to lead all players.
