Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas —
Mike Balogun turned in a 25-point performance, leading a cast of four Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball players in double figures as the Wonder Boys (1-3) fought into overtime against Angelo State (4-0), falling 88-79 to the Rams on Saturday at Stephens Arena.
The two squads were tied at 70-70 after regulation, but Angelo State shot 6-for-8 from the floor in the overtime period to seal the win.
The Rams opened the contest on an 8-2 run, but Arkansas Tech very quickly got the offense going, pulling to within 10-8 after a 3-pointer by Balogun. ASU once again extended its lead out to 10 (20-10) after a 3-pointer by Tommy Woolridge, but again, Arkansas Tech fought back, using a 13-2 run to take its first lead of the contest after a
Branden Williams jumper at the 11:34 mark.
Neither team would be able to claim much of an advantage down the stretch in the first half, as the two teams had five lead changes and four ties over the closing minutes of the half, managing no more than a three-point lead either way. The two teams went into the half knotted at 33-33 after
Clarence Willard hit a jumper for the Wonder Boys as time expired.
The tie score would be short-lived, as the Rams opened the second half on an 11-0 run to take a 44-33 lead just over two minutes into the second half. The Rams' lead was in double digits (60-50) with 8:46 to go, but once again, the Wonder Boys battled back. Tech capped a 13-2 run with another Balogun 3-pointer to reclaim the lead, 63-62, with 5:18 to play.
Much like in the opening half, it would be a battle to the wire as the two teams traded leads four times with three tie scores over the final five minutes.
The Wonder Boys led 70-68 in the final minute and had a chance to extend the lead, but Angelo State turned a rebound into a transition basket to knot the game at 70-70 with 23 seconds to play.
Arkansas Tech held the ball for one final shot, but the attempt was missed, sending the game into overtime.
The Rams were red-hot in the overtime period, starting on a 6-0 run. Tech was able to cut the deficit to three (76-73) with 2:08 to go, but Angelo State outscored the Wonder Boys 12-6 over the final two minutes of overtime to seal the win.
Balogun's 25 points led all scorers.
Nick Wayman turned in a 15-point effort, while
DeChriston McKinney and Willard turned in matching 12-point nights.
Bryson Fletcher led the Wonder Boys with six rebounds, while Willard had a team-high seven assists.
Both teams were exceptional at the free-throw line, with Tech shooting 92.9 percent (13-of-14) to Angelo State's 90.5 percent (19-of-21). The Wonder Boys held a 36-32 rebounding advantage, while Angelo State led in points off turnovers (19-5), bench points (21-9), and points in the paint (34-20).
Arkansas Tech returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, hosting Cameron University at Tucker Coliseum. A 6 p.m. tip is scheduled.
