RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (1-1) will open the home portion of its 2014-15 schedule on Wednesday, when the Wonder Boys play host to Central Region foe Pittsburg State (0-2) at Tucker Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
Tech is coming off a split in its season-opening round-robin play, as the Wonder Boys traveled to Bartlesville, Okla. to face off against Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State. Tech has used a balanced attack through its first two games, with senior
Clarence Willard showing versatility, averaging 13.0 points and 6.0 boards per contest.
Mike Balogun and
D.J. Jethroe have been solid offensively off the bench, with each averaging 12.5 per contest, and
Tyler Friedel has shot 40 percent from long range and is averaging 11 points per game. At point guard, veteran
Jay Murphy has shown no signs of rust in the first two games, distributing the ball efficiently with a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, averaging eight assists per contest.
The Gorillas will be looking to get into the win column for the first time this season after a pair of losses at the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Pitt State dropped its season opener to Augustana 86-69 before falling 75-68 to Northern State in the finale. The Gorillas will be road warriors to open the season, playing their first six contests of the year away from Pittsburg.
Meanwhile, the Wonder Boys will be back on the road this Saturday at Angelo State before returning to Tucker Coliseum for four straight home contests. Tech will play seven of its next nine contests at home before playing a return contest at Pittsburg State on Dec. 31.
Wednesday's game will be carried live on KWKK-FM (100.9) in Russellville, with live statistics and video available at www.arkansastechsports.com.
