Tyler Friedel scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, going 6-of-11 from long range, while
Mike Balogun came off the bench to score 16, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (1-1) was unable to overcome the red-hot shooting of Southwest Minnesota State (2-0), falling 93-78 to the Mustangs on Saturday at the Bruin Fieldhouse.
A 3-pointer by Friedel opened scoring just 12 seconds into the game, but the Mustangs quickly tied the contest and pulled ahead, taking a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Mustangs were able to hold the Wonder Boys at arm's length over the first few minutes of the contest, with the Wonder Boys able to pull to within one (16-15) after a
Bryson Fletcher layup at the 13:13 mark of the contest, the Mustangs struck back with one of their 13 3-pointers less than 10 seconds later, kickstarting a run that saw SMSU take a 30-19 lead with 7:50 to go in the half.
Arkansas Tech answered with a run of its own, scoring the next 10 points of the game to once again pull to within one (30-29) with 5:58 to go in the half, but SMSU outscored Tech 13-7 over the closing minutes of the half to take a 43-36 lead into the half.
Friedel once again knocked home a 3-pointer to open the second half and cut the SMSU lead to four, but the Mustangs quickly pushed their lead back into the double digits, eventually leading by as many as 21 before the Wonder Boys narrowed the final margin to 15 points.
The Wonder Boys shot a respectable 42.4 percent from the floor, shooting for a 45.5 percent clip in the second half, but SMSU shot nearly 60 percent for the contest, including 64.0 percent in the second half.
The Wonder Boys return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 19, hosting Pittsburg State in a 6 p.m. contest at Tucker Coliseum. The game will be broadcast live on KWKK-FM (100.9-FM) in Russellville.
