Kaylee Konsella turned in a 21-kill performance, hitting .255,
Sierra Nighswonger dished out 55 assists and
Madison Nagel added 23 digs as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns volleyball team (23-5, 12-1 Great American Conference) clinched the outright Great American Conference regular-season title with a 3-2 win over Harding (17-7, 9-3 GAC) on Tuesday night at Rhodes Field House.
The win is the 15
th consecutive for the Golden Suns.
"Unbelievable, gutsy performance by our team," said Golden Suns head coach
Kristy Bayer. "Anytime Harding and Tech get on the floor, it's not going to be a clean, crisp match, but it always comes down to a tough battle at the end. We played extremely well under pressure tonight. It's an incredibly satisfying feeling. We have a lot more to accomplish this season but, outstanding play by our team tonight."
Harding looked incredibly sharp in the opening set, taking a 25-15 decision to open up an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Suns came back and won a hard-fought 25-23 win in the second set to even the match before taking a dominant 25-11 win in the third set to pull ahead 2-1.
The Lady Bisons took a 25-21 decision in the fourth set to even the match before the Golden Suns sealed the win with a 15-10 win in the fifth set.
Harding brought an efficient offensive attack to the opening set, hitting .481, however, the Golden Suns managed to top that in the third set, hitting .636 with 15 kills and one error on 22 swings. Harding outhit Tech .201 to .183 for the match.
Konsella's 21 kills were a match high, and the sophomore was joined by
Emily Todd (13 kills) and
Katie Huff (12 kills) in double-figure kills. Todd turned in a double-double, adding 15 digs, while Nighswonger did the same with a 13-dig performance.
Kaci Jackson also added a 12-dig night.
By virtue of winning the overall conference title, the win seals the overall top seed at the upcoming Great American Conference volleyball championships in Hot Springs, November 13-15.
Arkansas Tech returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 29, hosting a tri-match at Tucker Coliseum. Tech faces off against Central Baptist at 1 p.m. and Lyon at 5 p.m., while CBC and Lyon play one another at 3 p.m. Admission to all matches is free.
