Box Score RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. —
Dennis Robertson passed for 257 yards and two scores,
Logan Genz had a 14-tackle performance and
Shai Kobayashi added ten, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (3-3, 3-2 Great American Conference) was unable to overcome a Southern Arkansas (3-3, 3-3 GAC) defense that forced four first-half turnovers, falling 21-14 to the Muleriders on Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Wonder Boys opened scoring, using a five-play, 66-yard drive in the first quarter, capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to
Jerry Anderson to pull ahead 7-0 with 9:58 to play in the opening quarter.
Tech's lead would hold through the first quarter, but in the second quarter, the Muleriders would strike back, capitalizing on a red zone turnover by the Wonder Boys with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Si Blackshire to Michael Nunnery on the first play of the drive, knotting the game at 7-7 at the 12:07 mark in the second quarter.
The Muleriders' defense forced Tech into a three-and-out on the next possession, and after a punt by
Clayton Watson pinned SAU inside its own 20-yard line, Blackshire used a 66-yard pass on second down to put the football inside the Wonder Boys' red zone, and two plays later, the Muleriders scored as Blackshire connected with Zikerious Ware on a three-yard pass to put the Muleriders ahead 14-7.
The play capped a four-play, 81-yard drive that spanned 1:15, and would be the last points scored of the half.
The Wonder Boys threatened later in the second quarter, moving into the SAU red zone, but another red zone fumble put the ball back in the Muleriders' hands with 1:08 to go until half.
The two defenses traded stops in the third quarter, but the Muleriders would extend their lead as Blackshire connected with Sidney Moore on a 25-yard touchdown pass that capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive, giving the Muleriders a 21-7 lead with 2:36 to play in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Wonder Boys take advantage of a Mulerider penalty, using a kick catching interference call on a SAU punt to start their drive on the SAU 38-yard line. Robertson completed six of six passes on the drive, finishing with a nine-yard touchdown pass to
Tony Adams to pull Tech to within 21-14 with 6:41 to play.
The two teams traded three-and-out drives, but on the next SAU possession, the Muleriders were able to run some time off the clock, punting the ball back to the Wonder Boys with 1:51 to play.
The Wonder Boys pushed the ball downfield, getting into the red zone yet again, but a pair of penalties pushed Tech back to the SAU 39-yard line, and the Wonder Boys were unable to get any closer as SAU held on for the win.
Arkansas Tech returns to action on Saturday, October 18, facing Henderson State. Kickoff from Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field is set for 2 p.m.
