RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team played another match down to the absolute wire on Monday and came out on top, beating Ouachita Baptist, 4-3. The win was the first conference victory of the season for the Golden Suns and was the 100
th win as a collegiate head tennis coach for ATU head coach,
Shaun Wiseman.
The Golden Suns made quick work in doubles play, winning the top-two fights, 6-0, 6-0 to secure the point and take a 1-0 lead. Ouachita responded early in singles play with wins at flights four and three.
Elis Gergel won her top-flight match, 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match at two-all.
Nayara Alvarez then won at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3 to put Tech up 3-2 and on the verge of the victory.
The Tigers made a comeback at No. 6 singles to knot the match up again, this time at three-all.
That brought all of the attention to the No. 2 singles court where
Lucia Perez was battling back from a set one loss, 3-6. In the second set, Perez made a statement, winning 6-2. With all players from both teams looking upon her court, Perez clinched the deciding court, winning 6-3 in the third.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their home finale this coming Friday. That match will be against Harding and is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
