RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – On Friday night, the Arkansas Tech baseball team opened their final weekend series at home this regular season with a 14-1 win against Southern Nazarene in seven innings.
Originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time, a wayward storm cell sat on top of Russellville dumping enough rain to cause almost an hour and a half delay. Once the game got started, however, it did not take the Wonder Boys to take control.
In the top of the first, Wonder Boys' starter
Cole Dickson retired the side in order and in the bottom of the frame, Tech scored the first run on a RBI groundout off the bat of
Tyler Sardelli that scored
Derek Rockett, who led the inning off with a double to left-centerfield.
The Crimson Storm managed to tie the game at one-all in the top of the second, but the Wonder Boys answered back in a major way with a 10-run bottom of the inning. The Wonder Boys would total seven hits in the inning while also benefitting from a pair of SNU errors, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Tech would go on to add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to its final of 14-1.
Dickson would get the win as he handled 6.0 innings of a workload. In his time on the mound, Dickson scattered five hits, allowed the one run, walked one, hit one and struck out five. Freshman left-hander
Jude Stewart got the call for the seventh and in his collegiate debut, he would not allow a hit, issue one walk and struck out one.
The Wonder Boys and Crimson Storm will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. At 12:40, the Wonder Boys will conduct their Senior Day ceremony.
