RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team started out slow in their Thursday night game at home against Southern Nazarene, but once they got going, it was a runaway train of offense that led to an 87-51 win.
Through the first seven minutes of the first quarter, the Golden Suns were held to just six points on 2-of-12 (16.7%) shooting with three turnovers. Over the final 1:51 of the first, however, the Golden Suns went on an 8-0 run thanks to 3-of-4 shooting with two of those makes coming from three-point range. That late run flipped a five-point deficit into a three-point lead going into the second quarter.
From there, the Golden Suns would put their foot on the gas and not let up as they went on to shoot a staggering 27-of-42 (64.3%) overall from the floor and were 11-of-12 from the free throw line over the final three quarters.
By halftime, the Golden Suns were up 20 points as they out-scored SNU 24-7 in the period. The lead dipped under the 20-point mark on a pair of occasions in the third quarter, but neither lasted for long and the Golden Suns were up by 26 going into the final period.
In that final quarter, Tech was able to push the lead as high as 38 points as they shot 8-of-11 overall and were 6-of-7 from three-point range.
Five players scored in double figures for the Golden Suns with
Dessie Lancaster leading the way with 21 points off the bench. She was 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Lancaster also added 11 rebounds to record a double-double, her fourth of the season.
Next in scoring was
Jadah Pickens and her 18 points.
Logan Young had a baker's dozen while
ClaraGrace Prater had 12 and
Hayleigh Wyrick with 11.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for a home game on Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Baptist. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and at halftime, there will be a special on-court celebration for the 50
th-year anniversary of Tucker Coliseum.
