BETHANY, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team had their defense lead the way in their 63-55 win on the road at Southern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Suns would hold Southern Nazarene to a 24% shooting percentage overall as the Crimson Storm made just 16-of-66 shots from the floor. The 16 field goals made, and 24.2% shooting percentage were both season-lows allowed by the Golden Suns.
That standout defensive effort started immediately for the Golden Suns as they held SNU to just 15.8% from the floor in the first quarter (3-of-19) and 21.2% for the first half (7-of-33).
While the defense was holding the Crimson Storm down, the Tech offense methodically built out a double-digit lead by the 3:08 mark of the second quarter and led by as much as 13 points before heading into the locker room with a nine-point lead, 29-20.
The Golden Suns would stay in the lead throughout the entirety of the second half but had to fight off the Crimson Storm in the fourth quarter as they were within three points of the Tech lead at the 6:59 mark. By the 3-minute mark, the Golden Suns had pushed their lead back out to double digits and eventually won by eight.
Three Golden Suns scored in double figures for Tech and were led by
Logan Young and her 14 points. Young was 6-of-8 from the field overall and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. She added four defensive rebounds and three blocks.
Shalyn Lyle was next in scoring with 11 points followed by
AbbiGrace Cunningham and her 10 points.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for an extended stretch of home games as each of their next four games will be played in Tucker Coliseum. First up will be a Thursday night game against East Central on Thursday, January 15.
