DURANT, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech softball team suffered a walk-off loss on the road at Southeastern Oklahoma on Sunday to conclude the three-game weekend series. Despite the defeat in the finale, the Golden Suns still won the series with their doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Much like the first game on Saturday, Sunday's game was a scoreless pitcher's duel early. After neither team scored through the first two innings, Southeastern was the first to score with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, Southeaster was able to take advantage of a pair of Tech errors.
An inning later, the Savage Storm scored another unearned run to go up 2-0 through five.
Tech then came back a half inning later and scored a pair of runs to tie the score at two-all.
Sadie Turner led that inning off with a hit-by-pitch and then was promptly pinch-ran for by
Brooklyn Haney.
Kacie Gibbins followed that with a single to center to move Haney into scoring position.
Anna Winkfield, who had a big doubleheader on Saturday, drove in Haney on a single to left-centerfield. On that single, both Winkfield and Gibbins were able to advance 60 more feet on the throw, putting both in scoring position. The second run then scored as
Caroline Wilhelm hit a sacrifice fly out to center.
Southeastern was able to limit the scoring to those two runs in the top of the sixth to keep the score tied.
After holding the Savage Storm scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Suns threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh with a walk and two hits, but ultimately were held scoreless themselves.
In the bottom of the seventh, Southeastern got a one-out double and two batters later scored the game-winning run on a single up the middle.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for a road doubleheader this coming Tuesday afternoon. They will be taking on Northeastern State and the twin-bill is slated to start at 3 p.m.
