RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 non-conference win against Northeastern State on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Suns were able to secure the win as
Elis Gergel and
Melanie Griffiths were victorious in their respective singles matches.
The match overall began strong for the Golden Suns as they picked up the doubles point with matching 6-1 wins at lines one and two.
Northeastern State found their footing in singles play and came a point within winning the match themselves with wins at lines five, four and three. With their second point of the match coming at line one singles with
Monica Balau winning 6-4, 6-4, the Golden Suns needed to win the final two singles matches on court to earn the victory.
The first of those must-haves was at line two where Gergel emerged victorious. Gergel's hard-fought match saw her win 7-5, 6-4.
That brought all the attention to the match at line six where Griffiths was locked in a split sets battle. Griffiths would win the first set 6-3, but then dropped the second set by the same score. Undeterred, Griffiths blanked her opponent 6-0 in the tiebreaking set for the match win.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their spring break slate of road matches that will see them play four matches over six days. Those matches will also signal the end of their non-conference slate. For the full schedule of upcoming matches, check
