EDMOND, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team opened the spring portion of their season on Friday evening at Central Oklahoma. Overall, the Golden Suns lost the match, 5-1, but picked up a big win in singles and in the top-line doubles.
In doubles action, the Golden Suns won at No. 1 as
Elis Gergel and
Melanie Griffiths defeated the UCO team of Pete Komada and Nefeli Zafeiri, 6-2. At the end of last season, UCO's Komada was a part of the 27
th-ranked doubles team along with former teammate Blythe Buntrock.
The win by Gergel and Griffiths tied doubles at a match apiece. UCO would go on to claim the point after a win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, the Bronchos won the first point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. The Golden Suns then picked up their lone point of the match as
Monica Balau notched an impressive straight-sets win over Komada at line-two singles. Balau would win 6-4, 6-0. At the conclusion of last season, Komada was the No. 75-ranked singles player.
UCO then won at flights four and three to clinch the match and added a win the top flight for their fifth point. The No. 5 singles match between Tech's
Meaghan Butler and UCO's Hui Soo was left unfinished as they split sets.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for a quick turnaround as they play Newman on Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. out at the UCO Tennis Courts.
