RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-1 victory against Arkansas-Fort Smith out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
The Golden Suns started the match up 1-0 as they won the doubles point. The No. 2 pairing of
Monica Balau and
Natalya Montoya collected the first win, 6-3.
Nabilah Dunn and
Maria Krite then clinched the doubles point at No. 3, 6-4.
Melanie Griffiths and
Elis Gergel then completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win at top-flight.
In singles play, UAFS collected their lone point of the match as they won No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0. The Golden Suns would go on to win the remaining five singles matches to bring the match to its conclusion, 6-1.
After dropping that singles point, Dunn got Tech's second point as she won her No. 6 singles match, 7-5, 6-3. Balau then won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-5. The match was then clinched with the 7-5, 6-2 win by
Elis Gergel at No. 3 singles.
The remaining victories for the Golden Suns saw
Meaghan Butler win at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2 and
Maria Krite win at No. 4, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (8).
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their next match this coming Saturday where they will take on Nebraska Kearney in a neutral site contest in Arkadelphia at Ouachita Baptist. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
