Golden Suns pick up big road win at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech volleyball team got their Oklahoma road swing off to a great start on Thursday night as they beat Southwestern Oklahoma, 3-1.

The win was the third in a row for Tech and improved the Golden Suns to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in the Great American Conference. The six conference wins at this point are tied for the most in a season since 2022. That year, the Golden Suns went 6-10 in the GAC.

In the match against Southwestern on Thursday, the Golden Suns continued to have their offense overwhelm their opponent as they had 15 more kills than SWOSU (60-45) across the four-set match. The Golden Suns would have at least 13 kills in each set and improved their total each set, ending with and impressive 17 kills in set four.

Collectively, seven Golden Suns would register a kill in the match with five having at least seven and three over the double-digit mark. Henley Hooks led the team with a season-high 20 kills. It was the second time in her career with at least 20 kills. That total was also the most in a four-set match in Hooks' career.

Current GAC Offensive Player of the Week, Savannah Meyer was next with 12 kills. She was followed by Erika Hernandez and her 10 kills.

Aside from the Golden Suns' offense, their defense was also top-notch against the Bulldogs. Tech would total 92 digs and had 20 more than SWOSU. The 92 digs were a season-high for the Golden Suns.

Five different players would have double-digit digs. Millie Allgood led the way with a season-high 25. Samantha Wojtowicz was next with 18 followed by Meyer and her 14 digs to record another double-double, her sixth of the season. Setters Kenzie Garrett and Emma Kiser both had 13 digs to complement their 23 assists each, giving them a double-double as well.

The Golden Suns will now prepare for a match tomorrow afternoon at Northwestern Oklahoma. First-serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
