No. 13/6 Pittsburg State pulls away in second half from Golden Suns

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team played its final non-conference game of the season on the road at nationally-ranked Pittsburg State on Wednesday afternoon and lost by a score of 75-55 as the No. 13/6 Gorillas pulled away in the second half.

Playing from behind from the outset, the Golden Suns trailed by as much as 16 points at the 1:35 mark in the first quarter before battling back to trim that deficit to 12 by the end of the period thanks to a 4-0 run over the final 1:19.

That run continued for the Golden Suns in the second quarter as they scored the first eight points of that stanza to suddenly pull within four points of the Pitt State lead. All eight of those points for the Golden Suns during that run were scored by Hayleigh Wyrick. She would go on to score a team-high 13 points in the contest.

Pitt State eventually stopped the run and pushed their lead out to eight points by the 4:22 mark. The Golden Suns remained resilient and closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to head into the locker room trailing by just three points, 34-31.

Coming out of the break, however, Pitt State was able to reestablish control of the game and scoreboard as they scored the first seven points to capture another double-digit lead. The Gorillas would maintain that double-digit lead the rest of the way out and reached a high-watermark of 23 points at the 2:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

Kamryn Sutterfield and Julie Wagner would join Wyrick in double-digit scoring. Sutterfield had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench while Wagner scored an even 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting overall. Wagner also led the team in rebounding with eight.

The Golden Suns will now prepare to enter Great American Conference play the next time they take the court as they will be on the road at Northwestern Oklahoma on Thursday, December 5. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Alva, Oklahoma.
