Golden Suns pick up first win of the season in convincing fashion against Champion Christian

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team won their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they blew out Champion Christian, 93-64, out at Cyclone Arena at Russellville High School.
 
The Golden Suns never trailed in the game and were out to a double-digit lead by the 6:35 mark of the first quarter. In the first quarter, the Golden Suns led by as much as 16 points before taking a 13-point into the second quarter.
 
Second quarter action saw the Golden Suns remain in the lead by double digits, but Champion Christian was able to keep the margin from getting too far out of hand and trailed by 11 points at the break, 41-30.
 
The third quarter was when the Golden Suns began to really create some separation, but only in the second half of that period as Champion Christian was able to get the deficit into single digits at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter.
 
The Golden Suns would go on to outscore the Tigers 22-8 the rest of the quarter as Tech pushed their lead out to 20-plus points. That margin would hold the entirety of the fourth quarter. By the final horn, the Golden Suns had pushed their lead out to as much as 29 points.
 
Five Golden Suns scored in double figures with Hayleigh Wyrick leading the way with 17 points. Olivia Jones was next with 13 followed by Dessie McCarty and her 12 points. One point back of McCarty was Jaki Rollins. Rollins' younger sister, Jordyn rounded out double-figure scoring with 10.
 
Julie Wagner hauled in the most rebounds with eight. She also had three blocks to lead the team and had three assists to join three others with at least three assists.
 
The Golden Suns will now prepare to begin a lengthy stint of road games beginning first with a November 19 game at former conference rival, Delta State. Tip-off is slated for Noon in Cleveland, Miss.
