RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team finished out their first week of action back from Christmas break with another win at home as they beat Southeastern Oklahoma by a score of 74-57 on Saturday afternoon.
The win extends the Golden Suns winning streak to a season-long three games and improves their overall record to 7-3 and their conference record to 4-2.
The Golden Suns wasted no time in establishing control of the game against Southeastern as they scored the game's first two baskets to go up 4-0. Consecutive layups by Southeastern followed and knotted the game at 4-all, but that did not last very long as a block by
Dana Thompson led to a runout layup by
Sarah Edmondson, giving Tech the lead back.
From there, the Golden Suns would remain in front the rest of the way out and grabbed their first double-digit lead at the 3:53 mark of the first quarter on a three-pointer by
Maisa Marcal. That three was the first of five makes from downtown for the senior transfer as she ended with a season-high 15 points.
In the second quarter, the lead for the Golden Suns grew as high as 14 points on a pair of occasions. The Golden Suns eventually went into the locker room with a 12-point lead, 38-26.
Third quarter action saw the Golden Suns remain in complete control while growing their lead out 17 points heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Tech maintained a comfortable double-digit lead and eventually pushed it out to its apex of 20 points near the end of the quarter. Southeastern would get a basket near the end of regulation to make it a 17-point final margin of victory for the Golden Suns.
Statistically, the Golden Suns had three players score in double figures with another two getting to eight points.
Alex Hill led the team in scoring as she scored 19 points. Hill would add dix rebounds and five assists to her stat line.
The aforementioned Marcal was next with 15 points while
Dana Thompson followed with 10 points. Thompson was the team leader in rebounds with nine, narrowly falling short of her third-straight double-double.
Julie Wagner and
Hayleigh Wyrick added eight points each, respectively.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their first Oklahoma road swing of the season next week as they will travel to Shawnee to take on Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday, January 11 and then Bethany to take on nationally-ranked Southern Nazarene on the following Saturday.
