Golden Suns face Southern Arkansas in home opener

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech volleyball team will have their 2022 home opener and first Great American Conference match of the year against Southern Arkansas tomorrow night. The Golden Suns currently sit at 1-8 overall on the season.

Last season, the Muleriders went 5-21 overall with a 1-15 record among GAC opponents. So far this season, SAU is 0-8 overall to open up the year. Leading the offensive attack so far this season for the Muleriders is Landry Rogers with 82 kills while averaging 3.04 kills per set. Behind Rogers is Isla Olivas with 47 kills and Ava Tanner with 37. Pacing the SAU offense is Morgan Schuster with 228 assists so far. She also leads the team in total service aces with 11. 

On defense, the Muleriders are led by Samantha Still with 93 total digs. Schuster follows Still with 74 digs, while Sakura Thomas has 51. In terms of blocks, Olivas leads the way with 13 assisted blocks and seven solo for a total of 20. Lauryn Moultrie has also done a good job at the net with 12 assisted blocks and and five solo for 17 blocks overall.

For the Golden Suns, Maddi Siedenburg leads the offensive attack putting down a team leading 74 kills so far this season. Also strong on the attack has been Lydia Hale with 58 blocks, while Brianna Merkel has put down 49. Pacing the Tech offense is Merkel with 120 total assists on the year thus far. In their last match against Newman, Merkel picked up career assist 2000 as a member of the Golden Suns. Gracie Palmer follows right behind Merkel with 111 assists on the year. In terms of aces, Jamie Myrick leads all with 14 followed by Palmer with 12.

Anchoring the Golden Sun defense is Megan Solberg with 145 digs on the season. Solberg currently resides within the top-five in digs for the GAC. Following Solberg is Myrick with 83 and Palmer with 76. Holding down the front of the net for Arkansas Tech is Heather Thomas who has 20 blocks assisted and five solo for 25 total blocks. Lydia Hale has 15 assisted blocks and two solo blocks for 17 total and Zoe Lott has assisted on 11 blocks while putting down two solo to round out the group of blocking leaders for the Golden Suns.

The match against Southern Arkansas will be held in Tucker Coliseum with first serve set for 6 p.m. tomorrow night.
