TAHLEQUA, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team had a productive opening day of the second-annual Rumble by the River as the Golden Suns won four of their six doubles matches and 10 of their 14 singles matches.
The Golden Suns opened their day of action against host school, Northeastern State and won at No. 3 doubles with
Maria Krite and
Melanie Griffiths beating NSU's Belinda Jayaprakash & Aubrey Bailey, 6-4.
Tech then picked up wins in singles action at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 7.
All three of the singles wins against the RiverHawks came in straight sets.
Daniela Baez knocked off NSU's Alisha Moldakhmetova, 6-4, 6-1.
Madalena Amil won her No. 3 match 6-2, 6-4 against Leah Gonzalez Edwards.
Maggie Holcomb had the third singles win, beating Aubrey Bailey 6-4, 6-3.
After a brief break, the Golden Suns then took on in-conference rival Ouachita.
The Golden Suns would find a resounding amount of success against the Tigers, winning all three doubles matches and all seven singles matches.
In doubles, Baez and
Lea Grinberg were unblemished, winning 6-0. The team of Amil and
Aastha Dargude dropped only one game. Holcomb and
Isabella Major completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win.
In singles, all but one of the matches were won in straight sets. The only one to go to a third set was at No. 2 with Baez taking on Natalia Caprirolo. Baez won the first set 6-1 but dropped the second set 6-7 (3). In the tie-breaking set, Baez won 10-4 to secure the win.
The Golden Suns will be back in action tomorrow and are set to play seven singles matches once more against Ouachita and Northeastern State. Action starts for the Golden Suns at 11 a.m.
