RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – A significant milestone was achieved on Friday by Arkansas Tech head women's tennis coach
Abby Davis. Her Golden Suns made quick work of visiting Ouachita, shutting out the Tigers 7-0. That dominant result secured career win No. 200 in the career of Davis.
Taking over the reins of her alma mater in 2004-05, Davis has continued to elevate the program to championship caliber, winning GAC titles in 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2014-15. Not including the COVID-shortened season of 2020, Davis has won double-digit matches in 13-straight seasons, In three of those seasons, Davis and the Golden Suns have won 15 or more matches.
The milestone-setting match featured little to no drama as the Golden Suns handled all of their matches played with relative ease.
In doubles action, the Golden Suns dropped only five games en route to sweeping all three matches and giving themselves the doubles point. The duo of
Megan Bell and
Melanie Griffiths finished first at No. 3 doubles and won their match 6-1.
Aastha Dargude and
Madalena Silva at No. 2 doubles matched that outcome and finished shortly after. The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Lea Grinberg and
Daniela Baez finished their match 6-3.
Singles play did not let up in terms of Tech's dominance as all six matches were won by the Golden Suns in straight sets. Griffiths won her No. 5 singles match without dropping a game. Baez, Dargude and Major each won their matches 6-0, 6-2 respectively. Silva won her No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-3 and Grinberg topped the No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-1.
The Golden Suns will now travel to Springfield, Missouri on Sunday to take on Drury. First-serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. The Panthers are receiving votes in the latest ITA DII Poll.
