SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team hit the road on Sunday morning and took on Drury University in a non-conference match inside the Cooper Tennis Complex. Tech would drop the match to Drury, who were receiving votes in the latest ITA National Top-25 poll, 5-2, but the Golden Suns were extremely competitive in the match.
In doubles action, the Golden Suns (2-3) dropped the first match to come to completion at No. 3, but picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as
Lea Grinberg and
Daniela Baez won their match 6-3. The No. 2 doubles pairing of
Aastha Dargude and
Madalena Silva narrowly lost their match, 6-4, giving the doubles point to Drury.
In singles play, Baez got the Golden Suns on the board in the team match as she made quick work of her opponent at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1. Drury then grabbed a one-point lead once more with a win at No. 2 singles.
Grinberg battled extremely hard in her No. 1 singles match and eventually won in a third-set tiebreaker. Grinberg won the first set 7-6, but dropped the second set 6-0. Her bounce back in the third set saw her win 6-3.
Drury would win the remaining three singles matches to clinch the team victory, but a stout match at No. 4 singles with Silva made the entire match even closer than the final score would indicate.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for another non-conference road match later this week as they will travel to Searcy to take on Harding. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first-serve on Thursday, March 10.
